Four Frogs Begin Play at Austin ITF Futures

AUSTIN, Texas—Four TCU men's tennis players made the trip south Friday to Austin for the Rogers Beasley Volvo Hill Country Classic, an ITF Futures event. Two Frogs posted victories in singles qualifying action to advance.
Sophomore Sören Goritzka and junior Slah Mbarek both moved to Sunday's second round of qualifying with opening-round wins. Mbarek, seeded No. 6 overall, advanced after his opponent, Australia's Nathan Willis, retired from the competition in the first set with Mbarek leading by a 2-1 count. Goritzka posted an easy victory over Parish Preson (USA), 6-3, 6-1.
Two other TCU players, senior Zach Nichols and junior Paul Chappell, dropped out of the competition with opening-round losses, both in three sets. Nichols fell to the draw's No. 11 seed, Canada's Daniel Chu, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2. Chappell dropped a 6-7 (3), 7-5, 6-1 decision to Germany's Michael Nuesslein.
Goritzka and Mbarek will continue competition Sunday. Goritzka will face Derek Difazio (USA), while Mbarek will play Mico Santiago (USA). Complete draws/results from the tournament can be found at the link at the top of this page.
