Brighiu Reaches Singles Semis at Texas Regional

COLLEGE STATION, Texas—Senior Emanuel Brighiu continued his run at the USTA/ITA Texas Regional Monday by posting his fourth straight victory in the singles main draw at Texas A&M's George P. Mitchell Tennis Center. Following the victory, the Frogs' top singles player fell in the ensuing semifinal round.
Brighiu, seeded No. 14 in the main draw, put together a strong comeback to down Baylor's 13th-seeded Luis Grangeiro in Monday morning's quarterfinals, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2. The 6-3 Frog righthander had to overcome extremely windy conditions during Monday's morning match. Following the win, Brighiu fell to Rice's Harry Fowler in the semifinals, 7-6, 6-1.
The victory over Grangeiro marked the third seeded player that Brighiu defeated at the tournament. He downed Texas A&M's 17th-seeded Alberto Bautista in straight sets Saturday before posting one of the top wins of his career Sunday during a 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 victory over Texas' Ed Corrie, the No. 2 seed and 18th-ranked player in the nation.
"This was probably the best showing we've had in a while at this tournament," head coach David Roditi. "Briggy showed what he is capable of this week. He played consistently at a very high level, and that was very encouraging to see. I'm looking forward to watching him build off this tournament. We need him to be a big contributor and leader for us next semester."
Fellow senior Cameron Nash was also in action Monday in the Round 2 Singles Consolation bracket, as he dropped a 6-1, 6-3 decision to Texas Tech's Ryan Ybarra in the quarterfinals. Nash posted two consolation-draw victories over the weekend to reach the quarters.
Monday marked the end of TCU's run at the USTA/ITA Texas Regional. The Frogs are scheduled to return to the courts Nov. 6-7 at the Texas Invitational in Austin, Texas.
