HOUSTON, Texas - Senior Lizzy Karoly became the all-time leader in goals scored on Sunday night as No. 26 TCU used two second half goals to upend Rice, 2-1.Karoly tied the match at 1-1 in the 79th minute, beating Owl goalkeeper Meghan Erkel off an assist by sophomore Jordan Calhoun. The goal, which gave the California native 25 for her career, moved her past Sara Campbell for the all-time record in goals scored in TCU history.
Sophomore Kaylie Garcia secured the victory for the Horned Frogs in the 84th minute. On the play, Garcia followed her own shot, which ricocheted off an owl defender and blasted it past Erkel for the win.
"I am very proud of the effort the girls put in to come back tonight. That has been a characteristic of this team in that we don't quit," said head coach Dan Abdalla. "Give a lot of credit to their goalkeeper Meghan Erkel. She played phenomenal tonight. We did some great things tonight on the offensive attack and really just had that one little mistake early in the game. I thought our players stepped up big time tonight. We were able to get a lot of kids into the game that haven't played a lot of minutes for us and I thought they did very well tonight."
Two minute into the match, Rice's Korey Taylor put the Owls ahead, 1-0. In the 11th minute, Garcia rocketed a shot towards the owl goal off a cross from Calhoun, but Erkel came up with a huge save to keep the scoreboard in favor of Rice. Kristen Halverson followed 20 seconds later, booming a ball towards the back of the net, but Erkel once again was able to put a halt to the TCU run.
In the 24th minute, it appeared as if Calhoun tied the match at 1-1 from the left side of the box, but Erkel dived to her right to keep the Frogs off the board.
Midway through the half, Calhoun headed the ball towards the goal off a cross from defender Lindsay Holmes, but just missed wide of the goal.
Both Calhoun and freshman Leigha Leonard missed on consecutive shot attempts right before halftime. In the 40th minute, it appeared as if Leonard would net her first goal of her career off a free kick from Katie Taylor, but her shot sailed wide of the goal.
Following halftime, TCU came out on the offensive attack, continuing to pressure the Owl defense. In the 48th minute, Halverson took a shot from the middle of the box, but Erkel dived on the ball to keep the score at 1-0 in favor of Rice.
Six minutes later, senior Michelle Nguyen got into the offensive attack, powering a ball off a cross from Halverson, but once again Erkel was up for the task, saving another shot attempt.
Following Karoly's goal in the 79th minute, Tayor took a free kick from about 30 yards out and bombed a kick towards the upper half of the goal, but Erkel punched the ball over the top of the bar to keep the score at 1-1.
Garcia put the finishing touches on a dominating offensive showing by TCU Sunday night, netting the game-winner late in the half over the outstretched arms of Erkel.
TCU, who controlled the ball for most of the match, outshot Rice, 25-8, including 14-5 in the second half. Calhoun and Karoly each posted four shots-on-goal, while Garcia and Halverson chipped in with three shots-on-goal.
Junior Kelsey Walters had a solid night between the posts with three saves, while Erkel recorded 16 saves for the Owls, including nine in the second half.
With the win, the No. 26 Horned Frogs moved to 4-1-0 on the year, while Rice dropped to 1-3-1.
