Nichols Moves on at Baylor Invitational

WACO, Texas--Sophomore Zach Nichols of the TCU men's tennis team earned a pair of victories Saturday in the consolation bracket of the top men's singles draw to advance to the final day of competition at the Baylor HEB Invitational.
Nichols, who dropped his opening match Friday, has now posted three consecutive wins following Saturday victories over Texas A&M's Austin Klores (6-3, 6-4) in the consolation bracket's second round and Piotr Olechowski (La. Lafayette) in the quarterfinals. He is scheduled to face Oklahoma State's Anton Bobytskyi next in an 8:30 a.m. semifinal on Sunday, followed by a consolation final match later in the day if necessary.
The Frog tandem of sophomore Emanu Brighu and junior Adrian Simon was eliminated from the men's open doubles "A" draw after falling to Fresno State's Rudy Siwy and Mirko Zapletal, 8-2, in a quarterfinal match. Brighu and Simon reached the match by upseting Texas A&M's Austin Krajicek and Connor Pollock, the top-seeded team in the field, Friday afternoon.
In other action, junior newcomers Kelubia Mabatah and Eric Olson each reached the quarterfinal round of the "B" draw singles consolation before being eliminated from the tournament. Mabatah recorded a second-round victory of Eduardo Sales (New Mexico State), 7-6(5) 7-5, before falling to Texas Tech's James Wilson (6-2, 6-2). Olson defeated Patrick Dean (Texas A&M), 7-6 (2), 6-3 before dropping his quarterfinal match to Adam Srkala (Texas-Arlington), 6-2, 6-1.
"We played a lot better today," head coach Dave Borelli said. "Our guys just need to keep working hard. I thought Zach Nicholls played very well. He seems to have made a big jump in his game."
Play at the Baylor HEB Invitational resumes Sunday.
