
Horned Frogs sink Buccaneers on Sunday

FORT WORTH, Texas - Junior Lizzy Karoly netted a hat trick on Sunday as TCU upended East Tennessee State, 7-0, at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium.Overall, TCU tallied four of its seven goals in the first half. The Horned Frogs' seven goals were the most ever by a Purple and White squad in a single game under head coach Dan Abdalla, while Karoly's three goals on the day tied her for third all-time in goals scored by an individual in a single match. Finally, 25 different Horned Frogs saw action on Sunday against the Buccaneers.
Karoly put TCU on the board four minutes into the contest off an assist by Chelsea Cody. Jackie Torda looked to have increased the lead to 2-0 early in the match, but watched as her shot hit the post in the 14th minute.
Karoly, a returning all-conference selection, would net her second goal of the day one minute later from 30 yards out. The junior found the back of the net again a minute later, recording her sixth goal of the season off an assist by Caroline Starns. With her three-goal effort, Karoly posted the fastest hat trick in TCU history under Abdalla.
Redshirt freshman Kaylie Garcia closed out the half, beating ETSU goalkeeper Megan Masch off an assist by freshman Chelsey Wilgenburg. The goal for Garcia was her first career goal in a Horned Frog uniform.
Following the break, TCU got right back to work as Jordan Calhoun, an Oklahoma native, found the back of the net off an assist by Starns in the 47th minute. Starns would get into the scoring act in the 60th minute as she blasted a shot past Masch from Katie Runyon.
Finally, Michelle Nguyen put the finishing touches on a dominating day for TCU as she scored her first goal of the season off an assist by freshman Kaitlyn Shelledy.
Goalkeeper Kelsey Walters had another solid day in goal as she posted her fifth shutout of the season, while saving two shots. Masch and Caitlyn Gaughan combined to stop five balls for the Buccaneers.
TCU was led on offense by Karoly who had five shots overall and three goals, while Starns chipped in with three shots, one goal and two assists from her midfield position. Overall, the Horned Frogs outshot ETSU, 24-8, including 16-5 in the first half.
With the win, TCU moved to 6-0-1 on the year and has now posted the best start in school history. East Tennessee State dropped to 2-3-0 with the loss.
The Horned Frogs, who are currently ranked No. 12 in the Central Region by Soccer Buzz Magazine, will take on nationally ranked Texas on Sept. 19. Start time is set for 7 p.m. at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium.
