FORT WORTH--TCU erased an early double-digit deficit while earning its first overtime victory of the season during Sunday's 59-51 win over New Mexico at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. The Lady Frogs' sixth consecutive victory improved the team's record to 16-9 this season, including 9-2 in Mountain West Conference play--the program's best conference start since the 2001-02 season in Conference USA. New Mexico dropped to 13-11 and 5-6.
TCU out-scored UNM 13-5 in overtime to seal the program's first-ever regular-season sweep of the Lobos. Lorie Butler-Rayford, who helped send the game into overtime with the final points of regulation with one minute remaining, came up big in the extra frame. The 5-11 senior scored six points in OT while pulling down three rebounds, including two huge offensive boards. She had shot only 2-for-15 through the game's first 30 minutes.
Butler-Rayford finished with her third double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 boards. Helena Sverrisdottir, who provided TCU with its most consistent offensive weapon Sunday, scored a career-high 24 points after shooting 10-of-15 from the field. She also pulled down nine rebounds.
Adrianne Ross, who made her 100th career start Sunday, scored eight points and tied for the team lead with four assists.
Two Lobos, Brandi Kimble and Dionne Marsh, scored in double figures with 16 and 14 points, respectively. Marsh fouled out of the game early in the overtime period. Kimble and Jessica Kiepinski helped boost New Mexico to a 46-41 advantage over the Frogs on the boards with respective rebounding totals of 11 and 10.
A 19-0 run spread over an 8:16 period of the first and second halves helped the Frogs combat a 13-point deficit created by a long scoreless streak to begin the game. TCU went nearly eight minutes before scoring its first points Sunday.
The Frogs ended the first half with seven straight points before starting the second half with a 12-0 run to build as much as a six-point lead. The Lobos came back, and the game went back-and-fourth for the remainder or regulation. The second half alone featured seven ties and lead changes.
Butler-Rayford sank a scoop shot with TCU trailing by two points and only one minute remaining in regulation to help the Frogs force overtime.
New Mexico held TCU off the scoreboard for the first 7:45 of the game while pushing out to an early double-digit lead, 11-0. The Frogs missed their first 11 field goals and were out-rebounded by an 11-6 margin before Ross hit a mid-range jumper to break the dry spell. Combined with an 8:26 stretch without a basket to end the Jan. 15 matchup with the Lobos, the Frogs went more than 16 minutes without a field goal vs. UNM this season.
Trailing by 13, 24-11, with under three minutes remaining in the opening period, TCU put together a seven-point run to cut the deficit to single digits. Carter banked in the Frogs' second 3-pointer of the half, and Sverrisdottir drove the baseline for a layup next time down the court. Butler-Rayford added a jumper a few possessions later, while the team held the Lobos scoreless for the final 3:33 of the half.
TCU looks to continue its winning ways on the road Wednesday, when it takes on Colorado State at 8 p.m. CST in Fort Collins, Colo.
