FORT WORTH--TCU posted its second win over a ranked team this season with a 73-59 victory over No. 22/22 Wyoming Wednesday at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. The Lady Frogs extended their winning streak to five games while taking over sole possession of second place in the Mountain West Conference standings.
TCU improved to 15-9 overall this season, including 8-2 in the MWC. TCU had never won eight of their first 10 league games since joining the MWC prior to Wednesday. Wyoming dropped to 19-4 and 7-2 in conference play.
The victory helped the Frogs avenge a Jan. 12 road loss to the Cowgirls (62-45) in which the Frogs finished with the program's lowest point total (45) under nine-year head coach Jeff Mittie. Wednesday signified a much different result, as TCU hit 50 percent of its field goals and totaled 14 points in transition, compared to the respective totals of 26.7 percent and six points in the earlier matchup.
Adrianne Ross scored a team-high 21 points, including 13 in the second half, to led the Lady Frogs. Helen Roden helped stake the squad to a 15-point lead at halftime with 13 first-half points before finishing with 15. Roden hit all three of her 3-point attempts in the first half.
Lorie Butler-Rayford also reached double-figures with 12 points on 4-of-5 shooting, while Helena Sverrisdottir chipped in nine points and a game- and career-high 12 rebounds.
Three Cowgirls scored in double-figures, including Dominique Sisk, who totaled 16 points, Hanna Zavecz, who posted 11, and Jodi Bolerjack with 10.
The Lady Frogs ran out to a 15-point margin by halftime after dominating the opening period. The squad doubled Wyoming's shooting percentage (51.9 to 25.8 percent) in addition to out-rebounding the Cowgirls, 21-16. TCU's transition game (10 points) and bench (17 points) each played important factors in the early advantage.
Roden sizzled from the field in particular, as she made 4-of-5 attempts, including 3-for-3 from behind the arc, to account for her 13 first-half points. The Frogs totaled nine assists on their 14 field goals in the first half.
TCU held Wyoming to only 3-of-15 shooting in the opening eight minutes. The Frogs also posted a 12-7 rebounding advantage during the stretch while moving out to an 11-8 lead. Sverrisdottir collected six boards during the rush, including four on the offensive end.
The Frogs recorded two layups in transition by Ross and Danielle Nunn midway through the first half, and Roden followed with the squad's first 3-pointer to push TCU out to a nine-point lead, 20-11. Roden's play completed an 11-0 run.
TCU's advantage grew to 13 points with 3:20 remaining in the half. Roden totaled eight more points over a two-minute period during the stretch, including her second and third treys, one of which served as an answer to a Bolerjack 3-pointer.
Four more points to finish the half put the Frogs up, 39-24, at intermission.
Butler-Rayford and Emily Carter drilled two more 3's early in the second half as TCU's lead grew to 17 points, 45-28, with just over 15 minutes remaining. The advantage would break 20 points and hit 23 following a 6-0 Frog run fueled by two Ross layups midway through the final half.
TCU returns to the DMC court Sunday, when it plays host to New Mexico at 2 p.m. The Lady Frogs will take part in the WBCA's national "Think Pink" promotion during the game, which will be televised on a regional basis by the Mountain West Sports Network (The Mtn.).
