TULSA, Okla.--TCU's run at the D'Novo All-American Men's Tennis Championships came to an end Thursday, as both Frog doubles teams were eliminated from competition in the first round of the main draw.
Senior Kriegler Brink and sophomore Zach Nichols fell in a tough match to Maryland's Boris Fetbroyt and Andy Orban, 8-6. Fetbroyt and Orban are currently the nation's No. 6 ranked doubles duo. Brink and Nicholls previously had won two matches in qualifying play to reach the main draw.
Sophomore Emanuel Brighiu and junior Adrian Simon also fell short of advancing after suffering an 8-2 loss to Georgia's Jamie Hunt and Nate Schnugg, which were ranked as the nation's No. 8 doubles team during the preseason by the ITA (Intercollegiate Tennis Association). The loss completed a solid tournament for the pair, as Brighiu and Simon teamed up for three straight wins during the qualifying bracket, including their second victory this season over a group included among the ITA's top teams, to advance into the main draw.
In singles play, Brink was placed in the consolation round of the main singles draw and dropped a three-set decision to Wisconsin's Moritz Baumann (No. 28 in the ITA singles rankings), 6-7(6), 6-4, 6-4. The loss ended Brink's singles competition at the tournament.
"It was a good week for us," Head Coach Dave Borelli said. "We came out playing better than I thought we had been, especially in doubles. This should help build confidence in the guys for the other tournaments we have coming up this fall."
TCU returns to action this weekend, as several Frogs will compete in the Collin College Invitational in Plano, Texas, Friday through Saturday.
