Powers advances to semifinals at Baylor Intercollegiate

WACO, Texas - Casey Powers highlighted play for the TCU men's tennis team on Saturday with two wins to advance to the semifinals of the singles main draw at the Baylor Intercollegiate.
"I'm very pleased with how Casey has played and how he has stepped up this weekend," said TCU head coach Dave Borelli. Zach (Nichols) also played very well this morning, and I'm very happy that he has defeated two ranked players this weekend."
Powers led off the morning with a 6-0, 6-4 victory over UT-Arlington's Gonzalo Bienzobas. The freshman followed with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Hugo Taracido of UT-Arlington to advance to the semifinal round. Powers, who has won all four matches this weekend in straight sets, will face Francisco Segura on Sunday morning.
Nichols defeated his second nationally ranked player on Saturday morning over No. 8 seed Dominik Mueller of Baylor. After dropping the first set, Nichols claimed the second set, and Mueller, who is ranked No. 61 in the Fila/ITA poll, had to retire due to injury. The true freshman's run ended in the quarterfinals with a 6-4, 6-1 loss to No. 2 Robbye Poole of Ole Miss.
Another Horned Frog newcomer, Adrian Simon, fell in the round of 16 to Matt Brown of Baylor, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3. Simon won two matches on Friday, including an upset win over No. 7 Thomas Liversage of San Diego.
In the singles consolation draws, Kriegler Brink and Alex Panayides both fell in the third round on Saturday. Jack Seider scored a third round victory over Andres Medina of Lamar before falling in the quarterfinals to Piotr Olechowski of Louisiana-Lafayette.
