Men's golf team slips into eighth-place finish

TUCSON, Ariz. - Three of TCU's five golfers double-bogeyed the final hole at the OMNI Tucson National Golf Resort, typifying a tough final day for the Horned Frogs at the National Invitational Tournament. As a result, the Frogs, who began the day in fourth place, fell into eighth at the 15-team tournament.
TCU finished the event with a three-round 869 (+5). With a 24-under-par score of 840, 21st-ranked Arizona State won the team title. Nine of the schools, including 30th-ranked TCU, were listed among the nation's top 30 according to the Golfstat ratings system.
Sophomore Robby Ormand was the team's top finisher, as he tied for 16th with a 54-hole sum of 215 (-1). Ormand entered the day tied for fourth before shooting a 3-over 75 on the final 18 holes. It marked the first top-20 placement in his career.
Drew Stoltz carded a 76 on Tuesday to fall from a share of 10th into a tie for the 29th position. The team's lone senior completed the event with a 218 (+2).
True freshman Travis Woolf finished one shot behind Stoltz to grab a share of 34th place. His final-round 74 (+2) matched TCU's best score of the day.
Junior Franklin Corpening, who tied for 48th place at 221 (+5), netted the other 74. Sophomore Jesse Speirs, who posted a final total of 223 (+7), rounded out the TCU contingent. Speirs had recorded back-to-back top-15 finishes prior tying for 59th in Tucson.
TCU is next in action at the U.S. Collegiate Championship in Alpharetta, Ga., April 9-11. The Horned Frogs will return to OMNI Tucson National from April 26-28 for the Mountain West Conference Championships.
