
TCU drops overtime match to UNLV

FORT WORTH, Texas - TCU connected on 17 shots Sunday afternoon, but dropped a 1-0 overtime match to Mountain West foe UNLV at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium.
In a back-and-fourth match that saw both teams have scoring opportunities, UNLV outshot TCU on the day by two shots. The Horned Frogs held a 10-8 shot advantage in the second half and missed on several opportunities to find the back of the net throughout the contest.
Overall, TCU had two shots hit the post at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium Sunday afternoon, including one deep in the Rebels box late in the second half.
Early in the match, Chelsea Cody looked to put the Horned Frogs on the board, but had her shot blocked by the UNLV defense. Caroline Starns, a junior from Arlington, connected on a shot 24 seconds later, but also had her shot blocked by Rebel defender Mack Neely.
At the 24:46 mark of the first half, sophomore Lizzy Karoly received a pass from Jackie Torda inside the Rebel box, but watched as her shot hit the right post to keep the score knotted at 0-0.
Leading the way for the Horned Frogs during the period was Cody and Karoly, who both posted two shots apiece.
Midway through the second half, freshman Cheryl Martin tried to give TCU the 1-0 advantage, but had her shot saved by Rebel goalkeeper Alica Lugo. The Horned Frogs tried to rally to end the period, but both Karoly and Torda had their shots saved by Lugo.
After a scoreless regulation, Torda once again tried to connect from just outside the Rebel box, but came up empty, getting her shot blocked by a UNLV defender. Finally, UNLV's Shannon Hughes broke the tie in the 98th minute off an assist by Katie Carney to give UNLV the conference victory.
Overall, TCU was led on offense by Starns, who posted five shots, while Karoly and Torda both recorded three apiece. On defense, Kelsey Walters had a solid day between the posts, stopping five shots, while Lugo saved four for the Rebels.
The Horned Frogs, who moved to 5-3-0 at home this fall with the loss, played in front of 1,029 spectators Sunday afternoon. TCU is now 7-9-0 on the year overall and 2-3-0 in conference action. UNLV moved to 8-3-5 overall and stayed undefeated in conference action at 2-0-1.
TCU will next be in action Oct. 26 at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium against Utah. Start time for the match is set for 7 p.m. and will mark senior day in Fort Worth.
