FORT WORTH, Texas - Playing its first regular season match of the 2006 season, the TCU soccer team fell to Rice, 1-0, on Saturday in front of the third largest crowd in TCU soccer history.
"I think we got better as the game went on," head coach Dan Abdalla said. "We certainly got better in terms of playing to attack instead of to defend. I thought we were just a bit too tentative the entire match."
With 1,216 fans in attendance at the first-ever home match under the lights at Garvey-Rosenthal Stadium, TCU (0-1-0) and Rice (1-0-0) played an even match for most of the game.
For the match, the Horned Frogs were able to outshoot the Owls' 15-14. However, it only took one shot to make all the difference for the Owls.
At the 25:28 mark in the first half, Rice's Clory Martin was able to get a shot past TCU goalkeeper Katy Buchanan for the lone score of the match. Martin's goal, which came from the middle of the box was assisted by Christine Petric.
Tallying 10 shots on goal for the game, the Horned Frogs were unable to get a shot past Rice goalkeeper Amy McClintock, who made nine saves for the match.
Freshman Lizzy Karoly paced the Horned Frogs with seven shots, five of which were on goal. Fellow freshman Michelle Nguyen tallied four shots, including three on goal. Kelsey Vross filled in at goalie for Buchanan in the second half and tallied four saves.
After witnessing the energetic atmosphere from the crowd, Abdalla believes that playing under the lights will create an advantage for the Horned Frogs in the future.
"Playing under the lights in front of a crowd like this is a big advantage," Abdalla said. "It creates a nice atmosphere and a nice setting for the kids to play."
The Horned Frogs continue play on Sunday, when they travel to Lubbock, Texas, to face Texas Tech at 1 p.m.
