LUBBOCK, Texas - A goal off a corner kick and an own goal by TCU enabled Texas Tech to defeat the Horned Frogs, 2-0, on Sunday at R.P. Fuller Stadium.
The win by Texas Tech snapped TCU's six-match win streak over the Red Raiders, as TCU fell to 0-2 on year and Texas Tech improved to 2-0.
Texas Tech was able to get on the scoreboard early, as the Red Raiders' Sara Clopton was able score off a corner kick by Emmie Bennett at the 1:53 mark.
With the Texas Tech leading 1-0, the Red Raiders received a gift at the 19:00 minute mark, as the Horned Frogs allowed an own goal. The own goal was scored as Breanne Kaldheim fed a pass back to goalkeeper Kelsey Vross who misplayed the ball as it trickled into the Horned Frogs' net.
In the first half, both teams had to deal with uncertainty of the game clock, as technical difficulties made the clock inoperable until the second half.
In the second half, the first scoring opportunity for either team came on a corner kick by the Red Raiders at the 51:55 mark, as Kelly Faerber saved a goal by knocking out a header by Texas Tech's Priscilla Esquivel.
With a two-goal lead, the Red Raiders were able to pullback into a defensive mode and limit the Horned Frogs' offensive chances in the second half.
At the 75:12 mark, Katy Buchanan, who replaced Kelsey Vross in goal at the half, nullified another Texas Tech opportunity by stoning Texas Tech's Brittney Harrison on a one-on-one breakaway.
Lizzy Karoly had an opportunity to get the Horned Frogs on the board in the 82nd minute, as she headed the ball past the keeper at the top of the box, but her touch was too strong and the Red Raiders' defender and goalkeeper were able to get back and cutoff Karoly's angle at the goal.
Michelle Nguyen led TCU with six shots, including three on goal. For the game, Texas Tech outshot TCU 13-11.
Freshman Kelsey Vross made the first start of her career in goal for the Horned Frogs, dropping to 0-1 on the year.
TCU returns to action on Sept. 1, when the Horned Frogs travel to Tulsa, Okla., for the Tulsa Golden Hurricane Tournament. TCU opens the tournament against Tulsa at 7 p.m. Sept. 1. The Horned Frogs close the tournament on Sept. 3 against Oral Roberts at 1:30 p.m.
