ABOUT THE GAME
TCU will entertain Utah for the first time since 1997. It has been nine years since the Utes set foot in Fort Worth. The last time came on Jan. 18, 1997, with Utah notching an 81-77 victory.
The Horned Frogs and the Utes are meeting for the second time this season and ninth all-time. In their last meeting, Utah took an 80-45 win over TCU in Salt Lake City on Jan. 28, 2006.
Utah, currently tied for sixth in the MWC race, has won the last five contests over TCU. The Frogs' lone win over the Utes came 48 years ago in a 71-64 victory on Dec. 13, 1958, in Salt Lake City.
Utah is one of the Frogs' oldest MWC rivals, as the series between the two schools dates back to 1953. Utah leads the all-time series 7-1.
Both TCU and Utah each boast three players scoring in double figures. For the Horned Frogs, Nile Murry paces the team with 16.4 points per game, followed by sophomore Brent Hackett with 10.6 and Judson Stubbs at 10.4. The Utes are led by Bryant Markson at 13.3 points per outing, while Johnnie Bryant has 12.9 and freshman center Luke Nevill with 11.0.
UP NEXT FOR THE HORNED FROGS
The Frogs will take on the UNLV Runnin' Rebels in their final game of the 2005-06 season. It will be the third straight year TCU has closed out its regular-season campaign on the road since head coach Neil Dougherty arrived on campus in 2002-03.
The 2006 Mountain West Conference Basketball Championships kicks off Tuesday, March 7, with the eighth and ninth-seeded teams battling in the play-in game of the league's tourney. Postseason projections has TCU tabbed for the play-in game with Colorado State as a probable opponent.
VISITING COACHES LUNCHEON
Utah head coach Ray Giacoletti will be serving as a special guest speaker in the final installment to this year's annual Visiting Coaches' Luncheon Series.
Hosted by TCU head coach Neil Dougherty and the Fast Break Club, this last luncheon will take place at noon on gameday in the Dee J. Kelly Alumni Center.
SENIOR FROGS' FAREWELL
The quartet of seniors Chudi Chinweze, Nile Murry, Judson Stubbs and David Markley will be recognized in a special ceremony prior to tip-off on Wednesday, March 1.
The group is the first graduating contingent entirely recruited by head coach Neil Dougherty and his staff.
Chinweze and Markley have played for Dougherty all four years, while Murry and Stubbs played two seasons.
LAST TIME OUT: BYU 81, at TCU 72
For the third straight game and 23rd time this season, TCU has had at least two players score in double figures. Senior Nile Murry paced the Horned Frogs with a game-high 25 points.
The 25 points by Nile Murry marked the sixth time this season and ninth of his career that he reached the 20-plus mark.
Judson Stubbs collected his fifth career double-double as he added 13 points and tied a career-high 12 rebounds. Stubbs is the lone Frog this season to earn the individual superlative.
Stubbs has led the team in rebounds 17 times this year.
Sophomore Neiman Owens set a career high in points with 13. He went 5-of-7 (71.4 percent) from the field and was perfect from behind the arc (3-of-3), while collecting four rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Junior guard Neil P. Dougherty made his first career start. He totaled five points and led the team in assists with six.
Chudi Chinweze returned to the hardwood after sitting out the previous two games. He tallied 15 points, making it the fifth time this season he scored in double digits. The senior forward also grabbed five rebounds, blocked one shot and had an assist.
Brent Hackett did not start for the first time this season, but made an appearance in the first half. He was battling shoulder and knee pain he sustained from the Feb. 22 game at Colorado State.
TCU shot a minimum of 40 percent from the field for the third game in a row and 10th time this season. The Frogs went 27-of-55 for a season-best 49.1 clip, including a 60.7 field-goal percentage (17-of-28) in the second half.
Senior David Markley has seen action 10 times this year, playing in his fourth straight game.
ROUND ONE: AGAINST THE UTES
at Utah 80, TCU 45
Jan. 28, 2006
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (AP) -- Freshman center Luke Nevill scored 18 points to lead Utah 80-45 over TCU Saturday.
The Utes (9-9, 2-5 Mountain West Conference) broke a five-game losing streak, while the Horned Frogs (5-16, 1-6 MWC) lost their eighth game in their last nine.
The Utes shot 50 percent from the field, including 11-25 from 3-point range, while TCU struggled on offense, hitting 30 percent from the field, 44 percent from the free throw line and only 4-of-21 shots from beyond the 3-point arc.
The Frogs stayed close in the first half, never letting the Utes get a lead bigger than five points. But it was a different story in the second half as the Utes quickly jumped ahead.
Using an 11-3 run to start the half and a 16-2 run later on, Utah blew open the game, seeing their lead grow to the final 35-point advantage with 1:41 to play.
Nevill's 18 points were one less than his career high. He went 8-of-8 from the free throw line after entering the contest with a .518 free throw shooting percentage.
Chudi Chinweze led the Frogs with nine points and seven rebounds.
