COLLEGE Park, Md. - Adrianne Ross' basket with 31 seconds remaining in regulation that tied the game up gave TCU the momentum leading into overtime. The Wildcats' Joy Hollingsworth had other ideas.
Hollingsworth, who was 4-for-16 from the field, including a dismal 1-for-8 from beyond the arc, took advantage of the Lady Frogs' (0-3) defense in extra minutes as Arizona (2-2) prevailed 59-56.
"This loss was a hard one to take in for sure," TCU head coach Jeff Mittie said. "We have to find a way to finish. On two different possessions in overtime, we were awful defending their ball screens. We can't make those kinds of mistakes down the stretch."
For the third straight game, junior guard Adrianne Ross paced TCU with 16 points; she played in a career-high 42 of 45 minutes and chipped in five rebounds and five assists. Junior forward Lorie Butler-Rayford recorded her second straight double-double performance with 11 points and a career-high 14 rebounds.
TCU built a nine-point lead in the first half, but Arizona mounted a run and the Lady Frogs entered the break trailing 59-56.
Back-to-back 3-point baskets by Ross and Butler-Rayford jumpstarted a 7-0 run that allowed TCU to have their first lead of the second half with 13:32 remaining. Both teams stayed close to each other in regulation and the lead changed 11 times.
Once in overtime, the Wildcats picked a part the Frogs in the paint and never surrendered the lead. TCU managed five points in extra minutes - a basket by Butler-Rayford and a shot from beyond the arc by Davis. However, Hollingsworth scored four points and Rhaya Neabors and Amina Njonkou contributed two more for Arizona.
The heartbreaking loss by TCU overshadowed the fact that senior guard/forward Ashley Davis' two 3-pointers tied her for second place on the program's all-time career list. With 162 to her credit, Davis is now tied with Amy (Porter) Sutton. She needs one more trey to take over sole possession.
Davis scored in double-figures for the third straight game with 10 points against Arizona.
TCU shot a season-low 29.2 percent from the field (19-65) and had 19 turnovers. The Cats also recorded 19 turnovers, but shot a slightly higher 33.8 percent from the field.
Arizona outscored the Lady Frogs 36-12 in the paint, while TCU converted 19 points off the Wildcats' turnovers.
TCU opens a six-game homestand on Nov. 22 against Houston. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum.
