TCU volleyball defeated Jacksonville in five games (30-21, 30-26, 23-30, 32-34, 15-10) to win its second match of the Pioneer Classic. Junior Anna Vaughn killed 21 balls and sophomore LeMeita Smith set a new career high with 17 kills.
TCU took advantage of nine-straight errors by Jacksonville to build a 20-14 lead. Freshman The Nirelle Hampton made three assists and added two kills in the early stages. Senior Hayley Harmon made two kills as a result of sets by Hampton.
Sophomore Talaya Whitfield posted three digs in the first game and recorded the clinching point with an ace, giving TCU the 30-21 victory. Senior Erin Estep also had two kills in the first game while hitting 1.000.
Game two began similar to the first game the Frogs played, remaining close early. After a timeout by the Frogs, trailing 17-15, freshman Pamela Gehrke ran off four serves as part of an 8-1 run, resulting in a 23-18 lead. The Dolphins immediately called a timeout in an attempt to slow the Frogs' momentum, but the attempt was unsuccessful and TCU took the 30-26 victory.
Jacksonville's Petya Borisova paced her team's attack with eight attacks through two games and helped Jacksonville build a 20-15 lead in game three.
TCU rallied to within one as sophomore Loren Barry and Whitfield prevented sure kills from the opposition to hit the floor, but Jacksonville remained relentless on offense to escape with a 30-22 victory.
Sophomore LeMeita Smith made her 13th kill of the game, a new career high, giving the Purple and White a 13-10 lead. The game moved into overtime before Jacksonville prevailed 34-32, pushing the match to a fifth game.
The fifth and deciding game started close, before TCU broke to a 5-0 run to take the match 15-10.
The Frogs finished the game with four players with double-digit kills.
TCU improved to 5-2 with the win and is currently on a five-game win streak. The team will play its final match of the tournament tonight against Denver. Match time is slated for 7:30 (CDT).
