TCU Moderator: Welcome fans, we have Mountain West Conference Offensive Player of the Week Bjarnveig Birgisdottir with us tonight. |
Alex (FW): What new experiences have you encountered since being in Fort Worth that have been the most intriguing? |
Bjarnveig Birgisdottir: It was a whole new experience for me. Soccer-wise, it is really similar to Iceland. Socially it is also pretty similar. It was fun to come here and meet new people. |
Laura (Bedford): What are the differences between international soccer and collegiate soccer? |
Bjarnveig Birgisdottir: In college, it's more fitness in running. With the national team, we focus more on the technical side of soccer. We combine the fitness with the soccer ball. Here we focus on fitness away from the soccer ball. |
Laurie (McKinney): What things do you like to do in your spare time? |
Bjarnveig Birgisdottir: I like to watch television, go swimming, travel and just hang out with my friends and family. |
Fred Frog (Hurst): How hard was it to adjust to the warm climate of Texas coming from Iceland? |
Bjarnveig Birgisdottir: It was really hard. I am still trying to get used to the heat. It's a lot more humid here than in Iceland. If I were home, the temperature would be around 50 degrees and here we are still in the 90s. |
Tweedy Bird (Fort Worth): What was the biggest culture shock for you coming to the United States? |
Bjarnveig Birgisdottir: I was really surprised that I wasn't that culture shocked. For the most part, people here are very similar to people in Iceland. |
Melinda (Richardson): What do you like best about being a Horned Frog? |
Melinda (Richardson): What do you like best about being a Horned Frog? |
Bjarnveig Birgisdottir: I like everything about being a Horned Frog. The people, the tradition, the school, the soccer program -- they're all great. It's like a very close family around here. |
Sam (Tulsa): Tell us about Coach Abdalla and the new staff. Are you excited about the direction of the program? |
Bjarnveig Birgisdottir: The only new person for us was Coach Abdalla. Dewi and Michelle have been here a few years. He is a very determined coach and he works hard to get the most out of us in practice and during games. He is very intense, which is good for us and keeps us on our toes. |
Glenda (Fort Worth): Do you miss home? What do you miss the most? |
Bjarnveig Birgisdottir: Yes I miss home a lot. I miss my family the most, especially my two new nephews. I also miss the candy that is made in Iceland. It's a mixture of chocolate and licorice, something you can't find around here. |
Dallas Alumni: What's the biggest difference between Iceland and the U.S.? |
Bjarnveig Birgisdottir: Iceland is often called "Little America" because we import a lot of the same things that you have around here. Things like fast food, McDonald's, Wendy's, Subway, all of them for the most part. When I arrived here last year, it was my first trip to the United States.
The biggest difference between Texas and Iceland is the weather. |
Bjarnveig Birgisdottir: |
Cameron (Granbury): What are some of your favorite memories of playing soccer for the national team? |
Bjarnveig Birgisdottir: Traveling to different countries, like Russia, Bulgaria, Belarus and Hungary. My best memory is scoring a goal against Russia to end the game with a tie to advance to the next round of the European Cup U-19 Qualifiers.
I really like my coach from the team, he taught me a lot. I enjoyed playing with girls from all around Iceland. It was the best feeling in the world to put on the national teams colors and to hear your national anthem playing. |
Sam (Tulsa): Any advice for someone wanting to continue playing soccer at the college level? |
Bjarnveig Birgisdottir: Keep working hard, both on the field and in the classroom. I would recommend doing some extra stuff away from the practice field to keep getting better at things you may not be as good at. |
Jennifer (Austin): How did you hear of TCU and what made you decide to come here? |
Bjarnveig Birgisdottir: Bara Gunnarsdottir was a teammate of mine in Iceland and she told me about TCU. I trusted her that it was a good place, since I didn't even visit before i arrived a year ago. She was right about everything. |
Darlene (Fort Worth): Do you ever get homesick for Iceland? |
Bjarnveig Birgisdottir: Yes, I do. I talked to my family once a week on the phone. We email back and forth, so that makes it a little bit easier, but I still miss home. |
Bjarnveig Birgisdottir: Yes, I do. I talked to my family once a week on the phone. We email back and forth, so that makes it a little bit easier, but I still miss home. |
Jaime (Salt Lake City): Do you look forward to traveling to new places like Salt Lake City and other Mountain West Conference cities, or is it a business trip and you're there just to play soccer? |
Bjarnveig Birgisdottir: The main thing is for us to focus on playing soccer, but I believe that we will get to tour every city we visit and that will be a lot of fun. I am excited to see new places in the U.S. |
Bjarnveig Birgisdottir: |
Frogster, Dallas: Did it take you awhile to learn to make the Horned Frog salute with your hands? |
Bjarnveig Birgisdottir: No it didn't take long. I thought it was strange at first, but now I love the tradition. It connects us with the crowd and the fans. |
Arnold (Fort Worth): Do you go to the TCU football games? If so, how do you like watching American football? |
Bjarnveig Birgisdottir: I go to every football game. I am starting to learn the rules of the game which makes it more fun for me to watch. |
AR - Fort Worth: Who would you like to see TCU play in soccer next season? |
Bjarnveig Birgisdottir: I would like to compete against more teams that are ranked like a Texas A&M or a North Carolina. |
TCU Moderator: Alright folks, thanks for spending the last half hour with us. It's been fun. We'll see you next week. Go Frogs! |
