FORT WORTH, Texas - TCU women's golf alum Angela Stanford is set to represent the United States in the Solheim Cup, which takes place Sept. 12-14 in Malmo, Sweden. Stanford, the most decorated golfer in Horned Frog history, played at TCU from 1996 to 2000. During that span, she won a school-record nine collegiate tournaments, was named second-team All-American three times and first-team All-American once.
Stanford had a remarkable 2003 season on the LPGA Tour. In June, she won her first career professional tournament, the ShopRite LPGA Classic. The following week, the Saginaw, Texas native forced an 18-hole playoff at the U.S. Women's Open. Her outstanding play moved her into the top 10 in the Solheim Cup standings and thus earned her an automatic berth on the U.S. squad.
The 11 remaining team members include: Juli Inkster, Rosie Jones, Beth Daniel, Michele Redman, Laura Diaz, Cristie Kerr, Meg Mallon, Kelly Robbins, Wendy Ward, Heather Bowie and Kelli Kuehne. At 25 years of age, Stanford is the youngest member of the U.S. contingent.
"I keep thinking how fortunate I am to be on this team," Stanford said. "They're all players who have been in a Solheim Cup, women who have done all this before."
A four-time All-Western Athletic Conference performer under head coach Angie Ravaioli-Larkin, Stanford was voted the 1997 WAC Freshman of the Year and 1999 WAC Player of the Year. In 2000, she was a member of the U.S. Curtis Cup team, a semifinalist at the British Amateur Championship and WAC Tournament champion.
"She's going to play with her heart," Ravaioli-Larkin said. "She's so proud to be from the United States. The competitive drive and fire that is in her is something that you can't teach."
The Solheim Cup will be televised throughout the weekend on the Golf Channel. Friday's coverage begins at 12:00 midnight and will run until 10 a.m. Saturday's play can be seen from 1:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon, and Sunday's final round will be shown from 1:00 a.m. until 6:30 a.m. All times listed are Central.
