Former TCU Golfer Claims First LPGA Title

FORT WORTH, Texas - Former standout TCU golfer Angela Stanford finished with a 16-under 197 to win the ShopRite LPGA Classic in Galloway Township, N.J., over the weekend. The victory marked the 25-year-old's first professional championship.
Stanford shot a 6-under-par 65 Sunday to finish three shots ahead of Becky Morgan and four ahead of Juli Inkster and Lorrie Kane. Stanford defeated Annika Sorenstam, the world's No. 1-ranked player, by 11 strokes.
"It's everything you dream about. If you ever get to experience your dreams, it's the most surreal experience," Stanford said.
Stanford started the final round with birdies on the first and second holes and then eagled the third. She parred the next 12 holes and then increased her lead by grabbing birdies on Nos. 16 and 17.
Stanford, the most decorated golfer in Horned Frog history; played at TCU from 1996 to 2000. During that span, she won a school-record nine collegiate tournaments, was named second-team All-American three times and first-team All-American once.
A four-time All-Western Athletic Conference performer under head coach Angie Ravaioli-Larkin, she was voted the 1997 WAC Freshman of the Year and 1999 WAC Player of the Year. In 2000, she was a member of the U.S. Curtis Cup team, a semifinalist at the British Amateur Championship and WAC Tournament champion.
Stanford will play in the U.S. Women's Open next weekend in North Plains, Ore.
