COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The TCU Lady Frogs moved to 2-0 on the season with a 71-48 road victory over the Air Force Falcons on Sunday afternoon. TCU now has won its two games by a combined score of 188-98. TCU has not allowed either opponent to surpass the 50-point mark or shoot more than 30 percent from the field in two games.
But unlike the season opener, it wasn't all TCU from the tip. Air Force jumped out to an 11-4 lead in the game's first eight minutes, as the Frogs made just one of their first 11 shots from the floor. TCU also committed seven turnovers during that span.
However, TCU went on a 13-0 run over the next six minutes and took a 17-11 lead at the 7:45 mark. But after Air Force drained a three-pointer at the 5:10 mark to tie the score at 21-21, the Frogs' defense stiffened, holding the Falcons scoreless over the final five minutes of the half. Thanks to their second 13-point run of the game, the Frogs took a 34-21 advantage into the locker room.
The tough Frog defense continued out of the break, as the Falcons were unable to score until 16:33 left to play. In all, it was a nine-minute scoreless streak for Air Force. By that time, the Frogs had pushed the lead to 20 points. TCU led by as many as 27 in the game and ended up with a 23-point victory.
Kati Safaritova led the team with 13 points, while freshmen Niki Newton and Sandora Irvin added 10 apiece. Irvin also contributed a game-high 14 rebounds to earn her second double-double in as many collegiate games.
The Frogs play the middle game of the three-game road trip on Saturday, Nov. 24 at 7:00 p.m. (CT) against Oregon. TCU then takes on No. 5 Oklahoma on Tuesday, Nov. 27 in Norman, Okla., prior to starting a nine-game homestand that starts on Friday, Nov. 30.
