TCU senior forward gets conference's nod with double-double and all-around effort
FORT WORTH, Texas (Dec. 18, 2000)- The Western Athletic Conference announced today that TCU senior forward Janice Thomas has been named the WAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week for December 18. Thomas became the fourth Lady Frog ever to take home the honor and the first since Amy (Sutton) Porter on January 25, 1999.
Thomas scored 15 points, grabbed 14 rebounds, dished out five assists, blocked six shots and contributed four steals in Sunday's 67-56 win over Stephen F. Austin. It was Thomas' second double-double of the season and the ninth of her career. The six blocks, five assists and four steals all were career-highs, and the six blocked shots fell just one shy of the all-time TCU single-game record.
She also shot 5-for-13 (.385) from the field, 1-for-2 (.500) from three-point range and 4-for-7 (.571) from the free throw line. With the victory over the Ladyjacks, TCU won its fourth straight game and improved to 5-2 on the season.
Thomas currently ranks third in the WAC in blocks (1.43 bpg), fifth in rebounds (8.4 rpg) and tied for 10th in field goal percentage (.429).
Other players nominated included: Omelogo Udeze, Fresno State; Ashley Orndorff, Nevada; Atari Parker, San Jose State; Amy Pack, UTEP; and Athena Pirpich, Tulsa.
