Bill Franey enters his second season at TCU as special assistant to the head coach in 2018-19. In his first season, the Frogs had arguably their most successful season since joining the Big 12 with 23 wins, three weeks in the top-25 rankings and a WNIT Semifinal appearance.
Franey brings over 40 years of coaching experience and knowledge to the TCU staff, most recently six seasons as head coach at Texas Wesleyan where he retired following the 2016-17 season. At the helm of the Lady Rams he posted a 103-82 record, coached 15 all-conference selections, four NAIA Scholar-Athletes and the program's only three-time NAIA All-American. His teams posted a winning record in five of his six season. Prior to that, Franey was an assistant coach at Texas Wesleyan for two seasons.
Franey has coached at the junior high, high school, junior college, NAIA, and NCAA Division I and Division II levels. His extensive men's basketball coaching resume includes head coaching stops at St. Henry Prep High School (Belleville, Ill.), Belleville Area College (now Southwestern Illinois College), and Tulsa. He also served as an assistant coach at Northeast Missouri State University (now Truman State University).
At Tulsa, Franey served as an assistant coach under Jim King before taking over as head coach for the final nine games of the 1979-80 season. He then continued as an assistant coach under Nolan Richardson. From Tulsa, Franey went to Europe, where he served as head coach for the Norwegian Basketball Federation's Olympic Development team.
Franey won a State Championship in Illinois and has an 83 percent high school and college winning percentage.
Franey played at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville under head coach Jim Dudley. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Southern Illinois and his MBA from SMU.
Franey has one daughter, Katie.
