Derek Siddiqui (suh-dick-EE), a two-time All-Mountain West Conference men's tennis singles selection for San Diego State University and former assistant coach at Gonzaga University, was named the volunteer assistant coach in August 2018.
At Gonzaga, Siddiqui spent four years on the coaching staff and was part of the rebuilding efforts that saw the Zags post the program’s first winning season in 2018 with 10 wins and two players earn All-WVV Singles honors along with an All-WCC Doubles team. During his four years with the team, Gonzaga posted 32 wins and four players earned All-WCC singles and doubles honors. In the classroom, seven players earned WCC All-Academic Honors, eight were named ITA Scholar Athletes and the 2016 squad earned the ITA All-Academic Team Honor.
A native of Long Beach, Calif., Siddiqui spent his final two collegiate seasons at San Diego State and was ranked as high as No. 71 in the nation his senior season in 2013. He posted a 14-10 record in singles play, including an 11-8 mark at No. 1, and went 3-5 against nationally-ranked opponents. A 2012 All-MW selection in doubles as a junior in addition to his singles accolade, he went 14-6 in doubles in dual matches as a senior.
Prior to his two years at SDSU he attended Cerritos College and was named the South Coast Conference MVP and Southern Section Player of the Year. He was ranked No. 1 in Southern California and No. 4 in the nation for junior colleges.
Following graduation he remained at SDSU for one season as a volunteer coach and also did individual lessons for collegiate players.
