Frogs utilize four freshmen on the mound
FORT WORTH – No. 19 TCU opened its home campaign with a 4-2 win over Tarleton Tuesday night at Lupton Stadium. Four freshmen toed the rubber for the Horned Frogs with Zack James picking up his first career win and Kade Eudy earning his second save.
The Rundown
Mason Brassfield turned in three scoreless frames in making his first career start. He allowed a pair of hits and struck out four. Zack James (1-0) earned the win in relief. He surrendered two runs (one earned) on three hits.
Colton Griffin got the Frogs' offense started with a lead-off triple in the first. Isaac Cadena hit a sacrifice fly to put TCU up 1-0.
Tarleton State took the lead in the fourth, but the Frogs minimized the damage to just two runs after the first three Texans reached. A passed ball aided the cause as the go-ahead run scored on a groundout.
TCU wasted little regaining the lead, matching the two runs with two of its own in the bottom of the frame. With two outs, Jack Bell singled to keep the inning alive. After a walk to Sam Myers, Sawyer Strosnider tied the game at two with a base hit. A dropped fly ball in left allowed the go-ahead run to score.
The Texans had a good look at tying the game as they loaded the bases on two walks and a base hit in the fifth. Noah Franco left them loaded with back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning. The Frogs added an insurance run in the seventh, taking advantage of a trio of walks. Bell grounded out to drive in the lone run for a 4-2 lead.
TCU's duo of Louis Rodriguez and Kade Eudy slammed the door over the final four innings. Rodriguez allowed a hit that was erased via a caught stealing in his two innings. Eudy struck out five of the seven batters he faced to lock up the save.
