Pascual clinched the match for the Frogs in a 3-set thriller
FORT WORTH – The TCU women's tennis team defeated the Washington State Cougars, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
LEE'S THOUGHTS
"It was very fitting for our senior captain Isabel from Spain to get the clutch clinch point on Las Ranas day. She's been so resilient throughout her entire career, getting better each semester and overcoming injuries and various challenges," head coach Lee Walker said. "It was difficult to close out this match because of how it all unfolded. There was about an hour and half span of being in total control of the match and it looked like we would get a relatively easy 4-1 victory.
"Credit to WSU for fighting back and flipping the momentum back into their favor. They had everything going their way at the end, and Isa had to step up and be clutch. I'm so proud of her. We've known we have a deep team all along and that really showed today. For us to win at 4/5/6 in the dominant fashion we did should give us a lot of confidence heading into conference season."
THE RUNDOWN
The match started in doubles, where Helena Narmont and Yu-Chin Tsai won their first match as a duo in a 6-1 victory on court three. However, the Cougars won on courts two (6-2) and one (6-4) to take the doubles point.
In singles, the Horned Frogs fought back quickly when Tomi Main won on court five for the first time as a Frog in a commanding 6-1, 6-0 victory over Martina Markov. Maya Drozd gave TCU the 2-1 lead following 6-2, 6-1 win on court six. Yu-Chin Tsai moved to 4-1 in singles on the season as she took down Hania Abouelsaad on court three (6-3, 6-2).
But the Cougars fought back, taking court one 6-3, 6-3, and then winning in a three set tiebreak on court two to even the score at 3.
It was captain Isabel Pascual who came up clutch for the Frogs. With the score tied at 3 and the last match on, Pascual was locked in a 4-4 third set with Washington State's Elyse Tse. But after holding serve to take the 5-4 lead, Pascual broke Tse's serve to clinch the match for TCU.
This is the first time the Horned Frogs won on courts three-six in singles since March of last year in a 6-1 win over the Iowa State Cyclones.
