Top-seeded Horned Frogs fall 4-3 to Wake Forest, fall one set short of fourth national title
DALLAS – TCU came one set short of capturing its fourth national title, suffering a 4-3 defeat to No. 2 Wake Forest in the ITA Indoor National Championships final on Tuesday at the Styslinger / Altec Tennis Complex.
The top-seeded Horned Frogs (9-2) fell behind 2-0 but rallied to level the dual at three points apiece behind singles victories from Pedro Vives, Lui Maxted and Cooper Woestendick.
Tied 3-3, the championship came down to a decisive set on court one, where Jack Pinnington battled Stefan Dostanic. Pinnington leveled his match via a 7-5 victory in the second frame but surrendered his second service game in set three and was unable to break back, ultimately falling 7-6 (3), 5-7, 6-4.
"A tough championship battle didn't go our way," said head coach David Roditi. "So proud of our guys. The way we lost the doubles point and they fought back after losing four first [singles] sets, turning two of those matches around. Cooper [Woestendick] getting the 'W' after losing the first set and Duncan [Chan] almost, almost turned his match around with that tiebreaker in the second. And Jack Pinnington gives himself a chance to win the championship there. Stefan was just too good in that third set. He played unbelievable tennis. Served great, returned great, and it just didn't go our way.
"Thanks to all the fans that came out. We had a great representation out there of all our purple. Great atmosphere. College tennis was definitely the winner. I think our fans were the winner. That doubles point turned out to be a critical point and man, we had so many opportunities to win that match in doubles, so many break points. Wake Forest played great. Their coaches did a great job of getting out of jail with some good serves, some good plays. We'll move on. That's the indoor season. Now, we focus on the outdoor."
TCU challenged for its fifth national title since 2022 in Tuesday's match. The Horned Frogs lost by an identical score to Ohio State in the 2024 ITA Indoor National Championships final but went on to capture the program's first NCAA Championship three months later.
By virtue of Tuesday's championship appearance, TCU is now one of only three programs to play appear in four straight Indoor Nationals finals alongside USC (2012-16) and Virginia (2008-12).
The Frogs dropped just their fourth indoor match in the last four seasons. TCU will carry a 42-4 indoor record into the 2026 dual season.
Doubles Rundown
As was the case in TCU's semifinal victory over No. 11 Stanford on Monday, the doubles point came down court three.
Down a break and trailing 3-5, Chan and Albert Pedrico rallied to even the affair at five games all vs. Franco Capalbo and Ioannis Xilas. The underclassmen duo, though, gave the break back on their sixth service game and came up short, 5-7.
Pinnington and Woestendick picked up their highest profile win as partners and level the action at one court apiece, downing No. 3 Luciano Tacchi and Luca Pow, 6-4, in the second position.
Lui Maxted and Pedro Vives suffered an untimely defeat on court one, falling 3-6 to the 30th-ranked pair of Dostantic and DK Suresh.
Maxted and Vives, the No. 2 ranked doubles pair and reigning NCAA Champions, saw their 15- match winning streak snapped. The senior duo also suffered defeat to a ranked pair for the first time in 2024-25. Their record remains a robust 19-3 overall and 12-1 vs. ranked tandems.
Pinnington and Woestendick earned their first ranked victory.
Chan and Pedrico have notched a team-leading four doubles point clinchers thus far.
TCU dipped to 9-2 in doubles play this season. The Frogs have claimed 14 of their last 16 possible doubles points dating back to their NCAA Championship. TCU is 29-5 in doubles play on the indoor courts since 2023.
