Freshman garners first all-conference weekly honor
FORT WORTH – After lighting up the track and at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic in the sprint events, TCU freshman Indya Mayberry was named Big 12 Track and Field Athlete of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday.
Racing against a stacked field that featured 15 top 25 programs, Mayberry didn't shy away from the competition. She won the 200m title on Friday night in Albuquerque, New Mexico, with a world-leading 22.41. A true freshman racing just the second 200m of her college career, she broke the TCU school record and posted the seventh-fastest time in collegiate history (third fastest by a freshman).
The following day, Mayberry competed in the 60m sprint where she clocked a 7.32 in the prelims to win her heat and a 7.16 in the semifinal but opted out of the final. Her time of 7.16 was the third fastest of the day and the second best of her young career. Mayberry's 7.11 at the Corky Classic on Jan. 17 still ranks as the fastest time in the NCAA this season.
Mayberry closed out the weekend running the third leg of the TCU women's 4x400m relay that secured a fifth-place finish in 3:34.52, just half a second off the school record and good for the 25th fastest performance in the NCAA this season.
Mayberry and the Frogs are back on the track Feb. 14-15 in Fayetteville at the Tyson Invitational hosted by Arkansas.
