Punch records first double-double
FORT WORTH – TCU's starting frontcourt led the way for the Horned Frogs come-from-behind win over North Texas on Sunday at Dickies Arena in the US LBM Coast-to-Coast Challenge.
Sophomore forward David Punch recorded his first-career double-double with 12 points and a career-high 12 rebounds to earn MVP honors. Junior center Xavier Edmonds had his best game as Horned Frog with a season-high 16 points, on 7-of-9 shooting, and eight rebounds.
North Texas (7-3) shot 54.2 percent from the field in the first half and ended the period on a 16-7 scoring run to lead 37-31.
TCU (6-3), which shot 38.5 percent from the field in the first, came out of the break and scored the first seven points of the second half to lead 38-37 with 15:40 left to play. After a couple lead changes, it was all TCU as the Horned Frogs shot 50 percent from the field and got two timely 3-pointers from Tanner Toolson, who finished with 10 points.
TCU used a late 13-2 run to expand its lead to 63-51, its largest margin of the game with 2:36 to play.
After playing two games in three days, the Horned Frogs have a break from competition for finals week and will return to action on Monday, Dec. 15 at 7 p.m. against Incarnate Word.
TEAM NOTES
- TCU improved to 44-31 all-time against North Texas.
- TCU improved to 5-2 all-time in Dickies Arena.
- The game was a designated road game for TCU, its first of the season.
- One game after a season-low eight turnovers, TCU had a season-high 17.
- TCU outrebounded UNT, 38-25. The Frogs improved to 5-0 this season, 145-44 under Jamie Dixon and 154-44 since the 2015-16 season when outrebounding their opponent.
- TCU shot 44.4 percent and held UNT to 42.6 percent. The Frogs improved to 116-3 when outrebounding and outshooting their opponent from the field under Dixon.
INDIVIDUAL NOTES
- David Punch recorded his first-career double-double. He had 12 points and a career-high 12 rebounds.
- Punch led TCU in rebounding for the sixth time this season.
- Punch finished with two blocks and has at least one block in all nine games this season. The last player with such a streak was Kevin Samuel in 2020-21 with 11.
- Xavier Edmonds led TCU in scoring for the first time with a season-high 16 points.
- Edmonds was 7-of-9 from the field, season highs for makes and attempts.
- Edmonds was 1-of-1 from 3-point range, his second-straight game with a made three.
- Brock Harding led TCU in assists for the eighth game this season with nine.
- Jayden Pierre went 0-for-2 from 3-point range, ending his 3-point streak at eight games.
- Tanner Toolson scored 10 points for his third game in double figures this season.
