Loss snaps seven-game home winning streak
FORT WORTH – TCU had opportunities to take control of the game but faltered at home in a 20-17 loss to Iowa State on Saturday.
The Horned Frogs outgained Iowa State 432-272 in total offense, including a 208-yard advantage in the passing game, but a 79-yard punt return touchdown by the Cyclones in the first quarter proved to be the difference.
Kaleb Elarms-Orr led the Frogs in tackles, and Josh Hoover tallied 319 yards through the air, but threw two interceptions.
The Frogs struggled to gain momentum early, and thanks to two timely interceptions Iowa State was able to take a 6-0 lead in a slugfest of a game early.
Thanks to a key fourth-down conversion near midfield, Hoover was able to lead the TCU offense down the field and find Dwyer in the end zone for the home teams first touchdown of the day.
Iowa State was driving with a chance to regain the lead, but Bud Clark's second interception of the game halted the drive.
The Frogs took advantage of the interception, marching down the field and scoring a touchdown early in the fourth to take a 17-6 lead.
Iowa State would not go away quietly by answering quickly to cut it back down to one possession with just over eight minutes remaining.
Needing a game-changing play, the Cyclones found it by way of a punt returned for a touchdown to regain the lead and overcome an 11-point TCU lead with just over six minutes remaining in the game.
