Hames sets career-highs in both discipline
FORT WORTH – The No. 3 TCU women's rifle team opened the spring campaign with a win, shooting a 4,714, topping Ohio State's mark of 4,703 and UTEP's 4,655. The Horned Frogs produced six of the top 10 aggregate marks in the match. Katie Zaun led all shooters with an aggregate of 1,185.
Ohio State claimed the top spot in smallbore, shooting a team score of 2,346, while TCU fired a 2,336. The Frogs closed the gap with an outstanding performance in air rifle, shooting a 2,378 to Ohio State's 2,357. UTEP placed third in both disciplines (2,312 smallbore; 2,343 air rifle).
Micah Hames put together a career-day, setting personal bests in both disciplines for a career-high 1,179 aggregate and a fourth-place finish. Rylie Passmore (1,176) finished sixth. Rounding out the top 10 were Marissa Fedora (1,173), Mikole Hogan (1,173) and Anne White (1,173).
In smallbore, the Frogs produced six of the top 10 individual marks. Zaun led all TCU shooters with a 589, which was tied for second in the match. Fedora contributed a 584 while finishing fifth. Hogan (582) and Passmore (581) finished eighth and ninth, respecitvely, to account for the Frogs' team score.
Not factoring in the team score were Hames and White who shot season-high marks of 584 and 581, respectively. Meredith Stuart also produced a season-high in the discipline, shooting a 569.
In air rifle, the Frogs fired the top five marks in the match and eight of the top 10. Zaun led the entire field with a 596. Passmore and Christina Hillinger shot identical marks of 595 while Ziva Swick shot a 592 to contribute to the final tally.
Hames continued her career day, shooting a 595 in air rifle. Annie Downum fired a 595 to finish third among all shooters. White matched her season-high a 592.
The Buckeyes were led by Lillian Warren's match-best 590 in smallbore. Derek Keiser was Ohio State's top air rifle performer with a 594. Both shooters finished in the top three of the aggregate standings.
UTEP was paced by Carlee Valenta in both disciplines. She fired a 583 in smallbore and a 595 in air rifle. Her aggregate of 1,178 was good for sixth among all shooters.
TCU and Ohio State will return to the range on Monday for a dual match. Sighting for the first smallbore relay will begin at 8:30 a.m.
