
Vives and Maxted Qualify for NCAA Individual Championships

Earned automatic berths after advancing to quarterfinals of ITA All-American Championships
TULSA, Okla. – TCU has a reservation for two at the NCAA Individual Championships.
Pedro Vives and Lui Maxted punched their tickets to college tennis' signature invitational on Friday at the ITA All-American Championships.
Both players reached the singles quarterfinals to automatically qualify. Vives also advanced to the final four of singles play, becoming TCU's first ITA All-American Championships semifinalist in the Big 12 era.
Singles quarterfinalists and doubles semifinalists at the ITA All-American Championships are guaranteed automatic berths at the NCAA Individual Championships, which run from Nov. 19-24 in Waco.
Vives continued his remarkable showing in the Sooner State with a pair of top-15 singles wins.
He secured his spot at NCAA Individuals behind a 6-1, 6-4 victory over No. 15 Jay Friend (Arizona) in the round of 16.
The Spaniard then turned heads in the quarterfinals. Vives found himself matched up with the nation's No. 2 overall player, Michael Zheng of Columbia.
He took set one, 6-4, via a crucial break with the contest level at four games all. Zheng, the reigning NCAA Individual Championships runner-up, raced out to a 3-0 lead in the second set and forced a decisive third frame behind a 6-3 set victory.
Vives' prowess on return points ultimately proved to be the difference in the match. Tied 3-3, Vives broke Zheng twice in the winner-take-all third leading 4-3 and 5-4 to polish off a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 upset. He claimed three of a possible eight break points.
Three of Vives' four wins in Tulsa have come at the expense of top-15 players. He walloped No. 6 Radu Papoe (Cornell), 6-1, 6-0, in the round of 64 on Wednesday. Vives improved to 10-7 all-time vs. ranked players.
He faces No. 3 Oliver Tarvet of San Diego on Saturday for the right to play in Sunday's final. Texas' Sebastian Gorzny and Aidan Kim of Ohio State comprise the second semifinal tilt.
Maxted defeated the Buckeyes' 35th-ranked Will Jansen, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2, in the round of 16. He broke Jansen's serve even at 4-4 in set one and used a double break to create an insurmountable 4-0 advantage in set three.
From Worthing, England, Maxted is 3-0 this fall in matches that see a third set.
He came up short to Gorzny in the quarterfinals, falling 3-6, 4-6. Maxted won three straight games in the second set and was two points shy of evening the frame. The performance in Tulsa improved his fall singles record to 7-2. Maxted has earned five ITA top-45 wins.
The tandem came mere points shy of qualifying for NCAA Individuals in doubles as well. Playing their third match of the day, Vives and Maxted found themselves on the wrong end of a 10-8 tiebreaker after alternating 7-5 sets with Baylor's Marko Miladinovic and Oskar Brostrom Paulsen.
Both Vives and Maxted have now advanced to the NCAA Individual Championships twice in their four-year TCU tenures. Vives and Gorzny received seeded positioning in doubles in May at the on their way to attaining All-American status. Maxted first went as a freshman 2021 in doubles alongside Sander Jong.
TCU has qualified eight players in the last three years for the NCAA Individual Championships, a list that also includes All-Americans Juan Carlos Aguilar, Jake Fearnley, Luc Fomba and Jack Pinnington.
