Maxted and Vives one win away from qualifying for NCAA Individual Championships
TULSA, Okla. – The stakes ratcheted up, yet TCU remained perfect.
Pedro Vives and Lui Maxted improved their collective ITA All-American Championships record to 6-0 on the second day of the main draw on Thursday at the Case Tennis Center.
Both players advanced to the final 16 of singles play. Vives battled past No. 28 Ryan Colby of Georgia, 6-1, 6-7 (5), 6-2 to begin the day. Maxted followed suit with a 7-6 (6), 4-6, 6-3 takedown of California's Theo Dean.
The senior duo then rolled over Duke's 16th-ranked tandem of Cooper Williams and Theo Winegar and into the doubles quarterfinals. Vives and Maxted took the first frame via a 6-1 margin. They secured a match-clinching break in set two leading 5-4.
Both players reached the singles round of 16 and doubles quarterfinals for the first time ever. TCU last had multiple players reach the third day of the ITA All-American Championships main draw in 2021.
Vives moved to 8-7 all-time vs. nationally-ranked foes and 6-3 in fall invitationals.
Maxted is a team-leading 6-1 in singles play through two fall tournaments. Four of his wins are at the expense of ranked players, including two vs. Dean. Thursday's tilt was a rematch from the quarterfinals of the Battle in the Bay Classic. Maxted got the upper hand on Dean in San Francisco in another three-set affair, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (3).
Vives faces No. 15 Jay Friend (Arizona) in the round of 16 on Friday while Maxted lines up opposite Ohio State's 35th-ranked Will Jansen. First serve for both matches is set for 9 a.m. Maxted hung a 6-4, 6-4 defeat on Friend on Sept. 14 in the semifinals of the Battle in the Bay Classic.
Vives and Maxted are playing together as doubles partners for the first time since their freshman seasons in 2021. They'll meet Baylor's Marko Miladinovic and Oskar Brostrom Poulsen for a ticket to the NCAA Individual Championships.
A singles victory by either player or doubles triumph guarantees TCU a spot in college tennis' preeminent individual championship. Singles quarterfinalists and doubles semifinalists at the ITA All-American Championships automatically qualify. The NCAA Individual Championships are being held in the fall for the first time ever and run from Nov. 19-24 in Waco.
