Horned Frogs battle back to win five-set thriller
FORT WORTH – Trailing two sets to none, No. 22 TCU rallied back behind career nights from Jalyn Gibson, Evan Hendrix and Melanie Parra to reverse sweep Houston inside Schollmaier Arena on Wednesday night.
After erasing a 2-0 lead and forcing a fifth set, the Horned Frogs (18-7, 10-5 Big 12) once again found themselves trailing and in need of some magic. Refusing to quit, a 6-0 run at the service line fueled by Jaylen Clark was the spark, helping TCU overcome a 7-12 deficit in the fifth set to outlast Houston 18-16 in extra points.
The victory marked the 18th win of the season for TCU, the most in the Jason Williams Era. It took a resilient team effort to battle back for the victory, featuring double-doubles from four Horned Frogs. Parra led the charge with 24 kills and 14 digs. The senior also tied her career high with seven aces at the service line, the second most in a single match in program history. Gibson and Hendrix followed, finishing with 15 kills each and 24 and 21 digs respectively (both career highs).
Setters Lily Nicholson and Stephanie Young split time running the offense. Nicholson recorded 30 kills, becoming just the eighth Horned Frog in program history to eclipse 1,000 in a single season, and Young posted a season-best 25. TCU also saw production from middle blockers Alexis Roberson and Sarah Sylvester, who combined for 12 kills on .429 hitting. The duo also added 11 blocks, hitting career milestones along the way. For Sylvester, it marked her 300th career block, while Roberson tallied the 100th of her career. As a team, the defense tallied 104 digs, the third most in TCU history.
After TCU won the first meeting this season on the road over Houston in five sets (Oct. 2), the Cougars sought revenge. They won the first two sets with a gritty performance, needing extra points in both the first and second to build the lead.
In the opening set, a 5-0 run featuring back-to-back aces from Parra erased a four-point deficit and gave TCU set point, but Houston scored four of the final five points to win the first 27-25. The following set, runs of 3-0 and 4-0 helped the Cougars stun the Frogs as they earned a 26-24 victory to take a two sets to none lead.
With its back against the wall, TCU dug deep in the third set despite starting off down 1-6. The Frogs found rhythm with Young guiding the attack and methodically chipped away at the deficit. A kill from Parra tied the set up at 13-13 and gave TCU new life. From there, the tides began to turn as Hendrix sparked a 4-0 burst, and Gibson put away the set with a big swing to cap off a 25-18 win.
The momentum only grew larger as the Frogs started the fourth set on a 12-3 run that featured nine unanswered points, including three aces from Parra. Houston tried to climb back into the set, but back-to-back aces from Gibson and another from Parra and Cecily Bramschreiber proved to be too much to handle. In total, TCU rattled off seven aces in the set to cruise to a 25-14 victory and force a winner-take-all fifth.
Needing one more set to complete the comeback, the Frogs fell behind early. Houston scored in bursts, taking an 8-5 lead as the teams swapped benches and extended the lead to five at 10-5. Williams called his team together for a quick reset, resulting in two straight kills from Hendrix and Parra, but the Cougars answered right back, restoring their five-point advantage.
Sylvester helped the Frogs side out, crushing an overpass and delivering the ball back to Clark, who subbed in to serve in a massive spot. The sophomore delivered, leading TCU on a 6-0 run to match point. Still, Houston wouldn't go away quietly, rattling off three straight points and forcing TCU to fend off a match point. The Cougars had one more stop in them before Gibson and Roberson finished the match up with kills to complete the reverse sweep.
No. 22 TCU takes a one-day break from action before hosting Texas Tech on Friday, Nov. 22, at 6:30 p.m. CT in its final home regular season match inside Schollmaier Arena. The Frogs will hold senior day ceremonies following the conclusion of the match, honoring their senior class.
