Horned Frogs host top-25 rivalry match in Schollmaier
FORT WORTH – Coming off a 3-2 road win over Houston on Wednesday, No. 22 TCU volleyball hosts its second-ever ranked matchup in Schollmaier Arena on Sunday against No. 14 Baylor at 2 p.m. CT.
TCU NOTABLES
• Head Coach Jason Williams will play against his former team on Sunday. Williams spent seven seasons with the Bears under head coach Ryan McGuyre.
• At 10-3 through their first 13 games, the Frogs are off to their best start to a season in the Williams Era.
• Sophomore setter Lily Nicholson ranks 13th nationally with 10.84 assists per set.
• Melanie Parra is the first player in Division I women's volleyball history to win back-to-back AVCA/GameChanger Player of the Week honors (Sept. 10 & 17).
• Parra leads the nation with 6.04 points per set and ranks second with 5.20 kills per set.
• Additionally, the senior was tabbed Big 12 Preseason Player of the Year and landed on the inaugural watchlist for AVCA 2024 Division I Player of the Year.
• After cracking the poll for the first time ever three weeks ago, the Frogs are holding strong at No. 22 in the AVCA/TARAFLEX Coaches' Poll this week.
SERIES HISTORY
Baylor leads the all-time series 22-10, but the Frogs have won each of the previous three meetings as Williams is 3-1 against his previous school.
SCOUTING REPORT
Ranked No. 14 in the latest AVCA poll, Baylor is 10-3 on the season with a 2-0 mark in conference play. The Bears opened Big 12 action with wins over Arizona and No. 14 Arizona State. Baylor is 2-2 versus ranked opponents this season. Leading the way for the Bears through 13 matches are senior outside hitter Elise McGhee (146 kills, 21 aces), senior libero Lauren Briseño (202 digs), graduate transfer setter Jackie Barrett Frazier (364 assists) and senior middle blocker Manuela Bibinbe (41 blocks). Briseño earned her second Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week award this past week for her performances against Arizona and Arizona State, recording her second-career double-double.
ROAD WARRIORS
• Battling on the road, fended off a late comeback attempt to pick up a 3-2 victory over Houston for its 10th win of the season.
• After letting a 2-0 lead slip, the Frogs found a way to win, going on an 8-0 run to finish off the Cougars in set five.
• The defense tallied 14 rejections, their most in a match this season, led by Sarah Sylvester with eight, followed by three other Frogs with at least five blocks.
• Melanie Parra led the offense with 22 kills. Jalyn Gibson and Becca Kelley joined Parra in double-figures, finishing with 13 and 10 kills respectively.
HOT HITTING
• TCU has hit .300 or better in three of its last six matches.
• In that span, Parra leads the team with 4.62 kills per set, and Gibson owns the best hitting percentage with a .374 clip.
• The Frogs handed UTA its first loss of the season (Sept. 17), outhitting the Mavericks by a whopping .469 to .083 and recording the seventh-highest hitting percentage in a single match in program history (.532 vs. Grambling State).
• TCU also hit at a blistering .388 clip in its first Big 12 win over Arizona, marking its best hitting percentage against a conference opponent since 2012 (.442 vs. West Virginia).
