Frogs Hand Cougars just their 11th loss at home in the last 10 seasons
PROVO, Utah – Battling in enemy territory, No. 17 TCU secured a gritty top 25 win, taking down No. 23 BYU in a five-set thriller on Saturday night.
The Horned Frog (12-4, 4-2 Big 12) marched into a packed Smith Fieldhouse and handed the Cougars their 11th home loss in the last 10 seasons. It also marked TCU second ever win in Provo, last defeating BYU on Oct. 10, 2009.
Melanie Parra's 26 kills led all scorers in the match as she totaled nearly half of the team's 58 kills. Junior Jalyn Gibson added 12 to the Frogs' offensive effort to go along with five blocks. TCU had a strong presence at the net, racking up 13.5 blocks led by Sarah Sylvester.
Both teams came out evenly matched in the first set. Just when it looked like the Frogs were pulling away on a 5-0 run, the Cougars responded with six straight points of their own. Tied at 15, BYU set off on another scoring run, putting five straight on the board as they cruised to a 25-18 win in the opening set.
TCU responded in the second set to even the match. Parra got the Frogs going early with the 150th service ace of her career and powered the offense with nine kills. She took over down the stretch, scoring four of TCU's final five points to hold off the Cougars.
Locked at one set apiece, both teams needed extra points to settle the third set. The Frogs got off to a hot start, jumping out to a 6-2 lead, but BYU clawed back to tie the set at 13-13 and go up as many as four. Gibson helped the Frogs overcome the deficit and tie the match at 23 after a kill and a massive solo block. With momentum shifting, TCU fended off two set points before a kill from Parra and a block by Roberson gave the Frogs a 27-25 victory.
BYU extended the match with a strong fourth set. Leading by three, the Cougars closed it out on an 8-2 run to force a decisive fifth set.
Looking to pick up a big road win, TCU rattled off four unanswered points in early going of set five to take a 6-4 lead and force the Cougars to burn a timeout. The Frogs kept their foot on the gas as a block by Gibson and Roberson put TCU up 8-5 at the halfway point, but BYU didn't make it easy.
A rowdy crowd of nearly 4,000 inside Smith Fieldhouse helped the Cougars tie the set at 11-all before both teams began to trade points. The Frogs had two opportunities to close it out as BYU stalled a pair of match points. The Cougars then had their own chance to win, but Parra silenced the crowd with a kill to tie the score back at 16. TCU closed out the victory with the next two points, ending the match with Parra's 26th kill of the night.
No. 17 TCU closes out a three-match road swing on Wednesday, Oct. 16, at Texas Tech in Lubbock.
