No. 18 TCU looks to keep momentum in conference play
FORT WORTH – No. 18 TCU volleyball closes out a three-match road swing at Texas Tech on Wednesday night at 6 p.m. before returning home for a match against Cincinnati in Schollmaier arena Saturday, Oct. 19 at 1 p.m.
TCU NOTABLES
• The Horned Frogs are coming off a 1-1 week that featured a pair of gritty matches against Utah and No. 23 BYU while battling a stomach bug.
• TCU handed the BYU just its 11th home loss inside the Smith Fieldhouse in the last 10 seasons, topping the Cougars in a five-set thriller.
• At 12-4 through their first 16 games, the Frogs are off to their best start to a season since 2015 (12-4).
• Sophomore setter Lily Nicholson ranks 16th nationally with 10.69 assists per set.
• Melanie Parra is the first player in Division I women's volleyball history to win back-to-back AVCA/GameChanger Player of the Week honors (Sept. 10 & 17).
• Parra leads the nation with 6.03 points per set and 5.22 kills per set.
• After cracking the poll for the first time ever five weeks ago, the Frogs are climbing the rankings, up to No. 18 in the AVCA/TARAFLEX Coaches' Poll this week.
SERIES HISTORY
• TCU leads the all-time series with Texas Tech 16-14. The Frogs have won each of the last four meetings.
• Cincinnati holds a narrow 5-3 lead in the all-time series between the two schools. Last season, both teams split the series in Fort Worth.
SCOUTING REPORT
Sitting at 9-8 overall and 1-4 in Big 12 play, Texas Tech comes into Wednesday's match looking to defend its home court. The Red Raiders are 4-1 at the United Supermarkets Arena, with their only loss of the season so far coming at the hands of No. 13 Arizona State last weekend. As a team, Texas Tech is hitting at a .195 mark. Graduate transfer Mia Wesley leads the Tech attack with 217 kills on the season so far (3.50 per set). Running an offense with two setters, Katelyn Cochran and Hanna Borer combine for 11.7 assists per set. Defensively, the Red Raiders rank second in the conference with 16.4 digs per set, led by libero Maddie Correa with 4.17. They also boast one of the better blocks in the conference, ranking in the top half with 2.3 per set.
Coming off back-to-back losses to Kansas State and No. 8 Kansas at home, Cincinnati looks to bounce back. The Bearcats are 11-5 overall and sit in the middle of the pack at 2-3 in Big 12 play this season. Junior outside hitter Carly Glendinning leads Cincinnati with 4.33 points per set and is one of three Bearcats to appear in all 57 sets this season. She is followed by Sydney Nolas, Abby Walker and Fallon Stewart, who all have over 100 kills on the year. Setter Katelyn Lefler has the offense hitting at a .245 clip while averaging 9.83 assists per set. Freshman libero Faith Frame anchors the defense along with the middle blocker duo of Abby Walker and Ligia Williams.
FLU GAME
• After the team was hit with a stomach bug in Utah, TCU secured a gritty top 25 win, taking down No. 23 BYU in a five-set thriller.
• The Horned Frog marched into a packed Smith Fieldhouse and handed the Cougars their 11th home loss in the last 10 seasons.
• It also marked TCU's second-ever win in Provo, last defeating BYU on Oct. 10, 2009.
• Melanie Parra's 26 kills led all scorers in the match as she totaled nearly half of the team's 58 kills.
• TCU had a strong presence at the net, out blocking BYU 13-9 on its home court.
TOP 25 WINS UNDER WILLIAMS
• As a head coach, Jason Williams boasts eight wins against ranked teams.
• During his tenure, TCU is 8-15 in matches against ranked opponents, including a 2-6 mark at home, 3-7 mark on the road and 3-2 mark in neutral contests.
• The Frogs' three ranked victories in 2024 are tied for the most in a single season in program history with the 2023 squad.

• Sarah Sylvester ranks second in the Big 12 with 78 total blocks.
• Her 1.28 blocks per set is also the third best mark in the conference this season.

• Sylvester recorded the 200th block of her career earlier this season against Minnesota (Sept. 7).
LEADING THE NATION
• Melanie Parra is proving why she is the nation's best outside hitter, leading the country with 6.10 points per set and 5.28 kills per set.
• She also ranks among the top of the sport in attacks per set (2nd, 13.55), total points (3rd, 361.5) and total kills (5th, 313).
• With 313 kills on the year through 16 matches, the senior is on pace for 548 kills, which would rank second in the TCU record books.
