Competing for TCU
The Horned Frogs look to use this final hidden dual tournament as a launch pad for dual season beginning Saturday, January 20 against Northwestern State. The team is led by senior, Destinee Martins and reigning NIT MVP Jade Otway.
Spring transfer, Chiho Mushika will compete in the purple and white for the first time in her career on Saturday. The graduate came to Fort Worth from the University of San Francisco where she posted a 13-7 singles record. The Japan native played steadily in the No. 2 position for the Dons with a 12-7 overall record.
Martins is coming off a strong fall season as she advanced to the semifinals of the ITA Texas Regional. Her march to the final four featured a three-set takedown of the tournament's top overall seed, Texas' Tanya Sasnouskaya 2-6, 7-6, 6-4, in the round of 16. Martins went on to better No. 5 seed Daria Smetannikov of Texas A&M, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1, in the quarterfinals and put herself within a victory of a berth to the ITA National Fall Championships. She fell to No. 4 seed Malaika Rapolu of Texas 6-4, 6-4 in the semifinal to wrap up her terrific run.
Pascual leads the team in singles wins behind a 7-4 fall record. The senior collected three wins in her last outing at the TCU invitational.
Helena Narmont wrapped up the fall season with the most wins in singles and doubles for the Frogs at the TCU Invitational. In singles the junior defeated Kara Wheatley of BYU 6-2, 7-5 on day one, Silivia Costache of Kansas 6-3, 6-2 on day three and Zuzanna Frankowska of Baylor 4-6, 6-1, 10-8 on day four. The Estonian was 2-2 in doubles taking down a Kansas State pair 8-6 on day one alongside Isabel Pascual and a duo from Kansas 8-6 on day three with Margaret Polk.
