Finishes with best record for her home country
FORT WORTH – Already a fixture in the top-half of the TCU women's tennis lineup, Jade Otway recently cemented herself as a mainstay for her native New Zealand in international competition for years to come.
Otway competed for team New Zealand in the main draw of the Billie Jean King Cup in July 2023 in Malaysia. A rising junior, Otway was the top performer for the Kiwis, as she led New Zealand with seven total victories. She produced a 4-1 record in singles and a 3-1 mark in doubles. All four of her singles triumphs came in straight sets.
"We are so proud of Jade for how she represented her family, New Zealand, and TCU in her debut Billie Jean King Cup," TCU head coach Lee Taylor Walker said. "For Jade to accomplish what she did in her first year with the team is exceptional and should give team New Zealand loads of confidence about their future being in good hands. Jade put in some outstanding work the 15 days prior at TCU, and I'm grateful to our entire staff and TCU Tennis family for preparing Jade for this moment."
The Billie Jean King Cup, formerly known as The Federation Cup, is the premier international team competition in women's tennis. The tournament was first contested in June 1963. Its inception created a ground-breaking platform that granted increased opportunity and exposure for women's competitors.
Otway rolled to a 6-0, 6-1 opening-round singles victory against Baha Toymyradova of Takashima. She was every bit as dominant in the second round, as she took down Sze Xuan Lim of Malaysia 6-1, 6-1. Her other pair of singles wins arrived via a 6-0, 6-1 triumph overr Sri Lanka's Saajida Razick and a 6-4, 6-2 performance opposite Latisha Chan of Takashima.
Team New Zealand concluded the tournament with a 4-2 record. The Kiwis began play with a 2-1 defeat to Mongolia but promptly rattled off a four-match winning streak at the expense of Turkmenistan, Malaysia, Indonesia and Sri Lanka. New Zealand concluded its stay with a narrow 2-1 loss to Chinese Taipei.
Otway finished her sophomore season in Fort Worth with a 23-14 combined singles record, serving primarily as the Horned Frogs' No. 3 player. She was named tournament MVP after leading TCU to the inaugural UTR NIT Championship. Otway was unbeaten in singles and doubles over the three-match affair.
"She's now heading into her junior season where we expect her to elevate to a higher level," Walker said. "It's also a time where her competition on the ITF and WTA tours is going to be tougher, and she's going to need to take her training to an elite level. What I love about this experience for Jade is that it really signifies the close of one chapter of her tennis life, and the beginning of a new one."
