The soon-to-be sophomore defeated two top-three seeds
LONDON, England – Jack Pinnington is in peak form, an auspicious omen for TCU men's tennis as the fall portion of the 2023-2024 season approaches.
Pinnington, a soon-to-be sophomore, closed his summer on the professional circuit by winning the M25 Roehampton singles championship on Sunday.
A London native, Pinnington put on a show for the home crowd in the finale, sweeping Daniil Glinka of Estonia, 6-4, 7-6.
Sunday's result signified the fourth professional title Pinnington has bagged.
The performance put an emphatic end to an extended stay across the pond for Pinnington. He competed in four 25k tournaments between July and August.
Pinnington, the former British ITF juniors No. 1, defeated the field's No. 1 and No. 3 seeds during his championship run. Three of his five wins came in straight sets.
His first victory came at the expense of Finn Bass in the round of 32 on Tuesday. Pinnington hung a 6-0 bagel on the former Baylor Bear in the first set, then finished him off 7-6 [7-4] in set two.
Tiebreakers were integral in Pinnington's pursuit of the crown. He went 3-1 when knotted 6-6.
Pinnington then showed poise beyond his years in the round of 16. He drew the assignment of the tournament's top overall seed, Charles Broom. Pinnington raced ahead of Broom 6-3 in the opening set, only to suffer an 0-6 setback in set two. The decisive frame was tightly contested, but Pinnington broke midway through and held on for a 6-4 triumph to bounce Broom.
He cruised into the semifinals behind a 6-4, 6-4 win at the expense of Michael Shaw on Friday.
Pinnington's dogged style of play shown through once more in Saturday's semifinal. Playing against No. 3 seed Daniel Cox, Pinnington dropped the first set in a tiebreaker, 6-7 [3-7]. He stared down match point in set two, again playing to a 6-6 gridlock. This time, however, Pinnington fought off Cox 7-5 in the tiebreaker to send the match to a third set. From there, it was all Pinnington. He broke Cox twice, rolling to a 6-2 set and match victory.
The result is sure to send Pinnington skyrocketing up the ATP rankings. He's currently slotted No. 773 in the singles table and has ascended as high as No. 489.
Pinnington, an All-Big 12 second team selection in singles, is expected to factor prominently in the top of TCU's singles and doubles lineup in 2023-2024. He concluded his freshman season in possession of the No. 53 ITA singles ranking after producing an 8-4 mark in duals, including a 6-1 record on court three. Pinnington was tabbed the ITA Texas Region Rookie of the Year in June.
