Horned Frogs did not drop a set in either NCAA Regional match
FORT WORTH – No. 2 TCU men's tennis is headed to the NCAA Super Regional for the eighth consecutive season.
The Horned Frogs swept No. 19 Texas A&M 4-0 on Saturday in the Fort Worth Regional Final on the Bartzen Varsity Courts.
TCU completed a regional sweep with the performance. The Horned Frogs did not drop a set all dual to the Aggies and posted a clean scoresheet in Friday's round of 64 win over UT Arlington.
"The guys got it done," head coach David Roditi said. "Really proud of them. Great performance over a very good team. There's no reason for the No. 2 [seeded] team to be playing the No. 19 [ranked] team in the nation in the second round of NCAA's. Not fair. It's not always fair, but congratulations to A&M on a good season. They had a lot of injuries. But now, we get to play at home, and we'd love to see you here next Saturday. Please come out. We're going to need you. Go Frogs."
TCU (24-2) now hosts No. 15 Mississippi State (21-7) at 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 13 in the round of 16, with the winner advancing to the NCAA National Championships in Lake Nona, Florida.
The Horned Frogs earned a hard-fought doubles point vs. Texas A&M (19-12) via consecutive 6-4 wins on courts two and three.
Sander Jong and Lui Maxted, the nation's No.22 doubles pair, struck first against the No.32-ranked tandem of Pierce Rollins and Matthis Ross. Jake Fearnley and Jack Pinnington then secured the 1-0 lead with a wire-to-wire victory against Kenner Taylor and Raphael Perot.
TCU clinched the match in short order from there, rolling to singles sweeps on courts one, four and five.
Fearnley, No. 21 in the ITA singles rankings, dominated Perot from bell to bell in the top flight to signal TCU's first singles triumph. The fourth year junior walloped the 53rd-ranked Perot 6-2, 6-1. Fearnley won his final five games. He boosted his season singles record to 24-8. Perot was the team-leading 14th ranked foe he has defeated in 2022-2023.
Sebastian Gorzny was every bit as dominant out of the No. 4 post, as the freshman hung back-to-back 6-1 frames against Guido Marson to put TCU within a point of punching its ticket to the second weekend of the Big Dance. Gorzny, the reigning Big 12 Freshman of the Year is now 19-2 overall and 15-1 in duals in singles play.
The match-clincher belonged to Pedro Vives- Gorzny's doubles partner. Playing on court five, Vives eased his way to a 6-4, 6-4 takedown of No. 123 Trey Hilderbrand.
TCU was well-positioned to perhaps snare a 7-0 win had the match not been contested as clinch.
Sander Jong was two points shy of beating Vives' to the match-clincher. He led Pierce Rollins 6-4, 5-3 on court three as play was halted.
Lui Maxted was on his way to his 11th singles win of his sophomore campaign, as he was ahead of JC Roddick 6-2, 5-5, and on serve.
On court two, Jack Pinnington outlasted Noah Schachter, the Aggies' highest-ranked singles player at No. 46, 11-9 in a set one tiebreaker. Pinnington rallied from two games down in the set. The second frame in his was left unfinished at 1-1.
The Horned Frogs improved their all-time NCAA Tournament record to 48-32 while improving their home postseason mark to 21-1. The win also increased Roditi's career NCAA Tournament record to 22-8.
