Lawrence, Kan. – The TCU women's tennis team fell to the Texas Longhorns in a barnburner on Friday afternoon at the Jayhawk Tennis Center, 4-1.
TCU (13-9) fought until the last point was played against Texas (19-4). In breezy conditions, the eight seeded Frogs took the top seeded Longhorns to the brink of the match.
The Longhorns took an early advantage from the first serve during the doubles point. TCU let a few early deuce points get away from them and Texas snared the lead. Sophomore Helena Narmont and her partner Yu-Chin Tsai battled in some close games, but they never managed to finish a game on top. The duo lost to Nicole Rivkin and Taisiya Pachkaleva 6-0.
On court one, Mercedes Aristegui and Jade Otway dropped the doubles point to the No. 54 ranked duo in the country Charlotte Chavatipon and Sabina Zeynalova 6-3.
As singles began, the Horned Frogs were poised to stay in the match. TCU clawed their way to three set matches on three courts. The lone Horned Frog to grab a win was displaying high quality tennis in Narmont. The Estonian finished her match in straight sets to balance the score at one apiece (6-1, 6-3).
Destinee Martins played her first ranked foe of the year in No. 108 Zeynalova. The junior kept the match tight in both sets but failed to get over the final hump as she fell (6-4, 6-4). The freshman Tsai presented exceptional poise for a freshman in her first Big 12 tournament. She dropped the first set 6-4. Yuki evened the second set at 5-5 after trailing 5-2. The freshman ran out of gas in the final moment of the second and fell 7-5.
On court No. 1, Lemaitre exemplified the toughness of a player who's body couldn't continue. After losing the first set 6-1 and in clear discomfort. The senior from France gathered her composure and managed to keep TCU in the match winning her second set 6-1 displayed an unorthodox style of tennis. After evening the set score at one all, her body would not allow her to play freely as she lost in the third set 6-2.
The Horned Frogs season is not yet over as TCU will await the decision of the selection committee and hope earn a bid to the NCAA tournament.
