Received the recognition after posting a 6-1 Indoor Nationals record
IRVING, Texas – Sander Jong is less than 24 hours removed from hoisting the ITA Indoor National Championship trophy for the second straight year, and another accolade is headed in the direction of the fifth year senior.
Jong, one of the great players in TCU's Indoor Nationals history, was honored as the Big 12 Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week on Tuesday.
Originally from Amsterdam, The Netherlands, Jong posted a 6-1 combined singles and doubles record, helping TCU become the first repeat Indoor National Champion in more than a decade.
Jong anchored TCU's No. 4 singles post throughout the tournament, which ran from Friday-Monday in Chicago. All three of his singles victories were sweeps of ranked opponents.
In doubles play, Jong lined up on court two alongside freshman Jack Pinnington for the first time this season. The change in partners proved seamless, as Jong and Pinnington were victorious in TCU's shutouts of No. 10 Baylor, No. 13 Georgia and No. 6 Texas. He clinched TCU's first two doubles points.
Jong commenced his stay in the Windy City in style on Friday. He and Pinnington rolled to a 6-3 takedown of the Bears' Tadeas Paroulek and Zsombor Velcz to clinch the doubles point in the Horned Frogs' eventual 4-0 opening-round win. Jong soon got the better of Velcz, the No. 7 overall ITA newcomer, again. He swept the freshman 6-4, 6-2 in singles play to score TCU's first singles point.
TCU's 5-0 walloping of Georgia the following morning saw Jong deliver arguably his most impactful performances. He and Pinnington downed the Bulldogs' Teodor Guisca and Philip Henning 7-5 in a doubles dual that saw all three sets decided by tiebreakers. Jong was again the first player off the court as the match transitioned to singles action. He blew past No. 62 Blake Croyder 6-4, 6-3.
He helped account for two of TCU's four points in its 4-0 shutout of Texas in Monday's championship match. Jong and Pinnington scored TCU's first of two doubles victories, defeating a pair of ITA top-35 singles players in Pierre Yves-Bailly and Siem Woldeab 6-2. Jong then put the Horned Frogs within one point of national title. He rolled past the 25th-ranked Woldeab 6-2, 6-3.
Jong's showing swelled his career combined record at Indoor Nationals to 23-6 (12-3 singles, 11-3 doubles). The 2023 edition of the event marked the third time Jong emerged from the tournament unblemished in singles. He posted undefeated singles records during his freshman and sophomore seasons.
Tuesday's announcement signified Jong's first-ever weekly all-conference honor. Jong is no stranger to all-conference recognition, though.
He received All-Big 12 first team recognition in singles and doubles in 2022 and concluded the season as the conference's No. 3 Singles Individual Season Co-Champion; Jong is also a three-time Academic All-Big 12 honoree.
Jong's season singles record stands at 8-1 following TCU's trip to the Midwest. He has notched six doubles victories, all of which have come on court two.
For his indoor and outdoor career, Jong boasts a 65-30 singles record and 67-33 doubles mark.
Jong and TCU return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 28 vs. UT Arlington. The match will serve as the Horned Frogs' outdoor season opener. First serve is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on the Bartzen Varsity Courts.
