Flores tallies career-high 19 points off the bench; Roberson notches double-double
FORT WORTH – TCU's supporting crew was ready when their numbers were called, and in turn staked the squad to a 10-0 start to the 2023-24 campaign on Sunday.
The Horned Frogs transformed a season-high 38 bench points into an 85-41 walloping of Prairie View A&M (3-4) in Schollmaier Arena.
Victoria Flores accumulated a game and career-high 19 points across 25 minutes. The freshman tallied eight points apiece in the second and fourth frames.
Flores' offensive breakthrough propelled TCU to a 68-29 scoring edge over the final three quarters.
Fellow underclassmen Aaliyah Roberson joined Flores in double digits, pairing 14 points with 10 rebounds on her way to her first career double-double.
Flores and Roberson's efforts came on an afternoon in which TCU dressed just eight players. The Horned Frogs scratched six from the scorebook, including Sedona Prince (21 ppg, 9.8 rpg, 3.3 bpg), whom TCU opted to rest for load management.
In turn, DaiJa Turner earned her first career start at center. The third-year sophomore made the most of it, too. Turner snagged a game-leading 14 rebounds while playing a team-leading 33 minutes. Turner had spent 22 minutes on the court combined over TCU's first nine games.
Half of the Horned Frogs available players scored in double figures. Agnes Emma-Nnopu and Madison Conner tallied 16 points and 14 points, respectively. Emma-Nnopu shot 4-8 from distance.
TCU, which entered the game second nationally in 3-point offense, endured uncharacteristic struggles with its stroke early on. The Horned Frogs led 9-2 three-and-a-half minutes in, but knocked down three of their ensuing 17 shots (18 percent) and nursed a 19-14 lead at the seven-minute mark of the second quarter.
But Flores and Conner promptly delivered the knockout blow. Flores scored eight points on three consecutive possessions to give TCU a double-digit lead it never surrendered at 27-16 with 5:43 left in the half. Conner then sandwiched five free throws around a record-setting 3-pointer over the ensuing two minutes, ballooning the Horned Frogs' advantage to 35-16.
Conner canned her 52nd long ball of the season with her lone make from distance in the second quarter. In doing so, she broke Taylor Robertson's NCAA record for most 3-pointers in a 10-game stretch to start a season.
Conner and Flores single-handedly accounted for a 16-2 run across three minutes.
Jaden Owens buried a deep ball from the top of the key at the first half buzzer to double up the Panthers at 38-19.
Owens came one point shy of giving TCU five scorers in double figures. She finished with nine points and a game-high eight assists before departing with four minutes remaining.
Emma-Nnopu accounted for seven of TCU's first nine points out of the locker room and help widen the scoreboard to 47-22. The Horned Frogs outscored the Panthers 16-2 over the final 3:48 of the period and took a 64-28 edge into the fourth quarter. Flores, Roberson and Tara Manumaleuga (five points) accounted for 12 of TCU's points in that span.
Flores and Roberson combined for 15 of TCU's 21 points in the final frame. Flores went 8-10 at the foul line.
TCU pulled down a season-high 54 rebounds. The 54 boards were TCU's most in a game in over two years, when it snagged 58 against Houston Christian on Nov. 9, 2021. Emma-Nnopu was one rebound shy of earning her second double-double of the season while Conner pulled down eight boards of her own.
The Horned Frogs also drained a season-best 25 free throws.
TCU held PVAMU to a 26 percent shooting clip (17-65) and did not surrender a 3-pointer. The Panthers' 41 points were the fewest allowed by TCU in a game this season.
