Hoover passes for 412 yards, Wiley has record-setting game
FORT WORTH – Josh Hoover passed for 412 yards while Jared Wiley set a TCU tight end record with 178 yards receiving as the Horned Frogs exploded in the second half to roll past Baylor 42-17 Saturday afternoon in Amon G. Carter Stadium.
TCU beat Baylor for the eighth time in the last nine meetings.
The Horned Frogs led 14-10 at the half, before outscoring the Bears 28-7 the remainder of the way. Dating back to the Texas game, TCU has scored 62 points in its last five quarters.
Wiley's 178 receiving yards were the most by a Big 12 tight end since at least 1996 and the most in a game nationally this season by a player at that position. He had a career-best seven receptions and two touchdowns, including an 81-yard scoring reception from Hoover to give TCU a 14-7 lead. It came just two plays after Jamoi Hodge and Micheal Ibukun-Okeyode combined on a tackle for a 5-yard loss on a Baylor rush attempt on a 4th-and-3 at the TCU 8.
Hoover completed 24-of-29 passes for two scores and no interceptions. With his 412 yards passing, he joined Ohio State's CJ Stroud as the only Power Five players to pass for at least 400 yards in two of their first five career starts. His 82.8 completion percentage tied for sixth-best in a game at TCU.
TCU began the second half quickly by driving 81 yards in nine plays, capped by a 28-yard scoring pass from Hoover to Wiley, to extend its lead to 21-10.
The Horned Frogs did not punt in a game for the first time since a 2010 win over Air Force, were 9-of-11 on third-down conversions and outgained the Bears 531-to-347.
