TCU 42 - BYU 17
TCU Head Coach Sonny Dykes
Opening Statement:
"Shout out to our student body, those guys were awesome today; showing up, supporting their classmates like they did. It's Thanksgiving weekend, a lot of these guys could've gone home and they stayed here and went to the football game, so I'm really appreciative of the students for doing that. I think it talks about the TCU family and how special it is that those guys showed up and the crowd showed up and was really good. So again, appreciate those guys for doing that.
"You know you have to give Baylor a lot of credit, I think they played really hard, they have played hard all year. I think David Aranda is a really good head football coach and I think it shows you how confident those kids are in him with how hard they play. There's never a play on film where they're not going hard and that's a credit to David and his coaching staff and Baylor. It's been a disappointing year for them just like for us and these guys always play hard and always show up. It feels good to get a win, it's been a while it seems like, and I'm proud of our guys. It wasn't real pretty. We had the two early drives that stalled out. We had the fumble and then the fourth down play that we didn't get. But we never punted, we moved the ball well the entire game. Josh (Hoover) threw for 400 yards. I thought he really threw the ball well. I thought the offensive line really protected well. We struggled more than we should have to run the ball but the pass protection was excellent. He had a lot of time and receivers caught balls. This is what it's supposed to look like and so it was good to see it. We were 9-of-11 on third downs, that's a hard thing to do out of the air, so again, I thought we executed well and the precision was there."
On Hoover and the turnovers:
"He didn't turn the ball over, so that was really good to see that. He gets better after every game, more comfortable, makes better decisions, gets on the same page more with the receivers. We had to move some guys around because of injuries. JoJo Earle moved outside, thought he did a good job when he was in the game. Savion Williams played well again. Jared Wiley had a great game. John Paul (Richardson) played well. Jaylon Robinson played well. Major Everhart made some plays, so it was good to see. I think that's what young quarterbacks are supposed to do, they are supposed to mature as they go through. I thought he played well and excited about next week playing against a great Oklahoma team and a big challenge. Everybody can see the continued maturation and growth from Hoover."
TCU linebacker, Jamoi Hodge
On the importance of the win:
"It was very important. It's been a while since we won, so getting that winning feeling and energy back in the locker room and the team is very important for us. It's also getting this momentum going into next week and going to OU."
On his last home game:
"It was very special, you know, I wanted to go out with a win. I'm going to remember this day for the rest of my life, tell my kids, tell my grandkids, so it's very special to go out with a win."
On how the defense played in the second half:
"We came together in the locker room and told each other "let's finish this game, don't let off on the gas pedal," so we came out with that mindset and we executed."
TCU linebacker, Shad Banks
On today's game:
"We just wanted to go out there and play hard for all of our seniors. Baylor runs some crazy gap schemes and things like that but we prepared really well this week and kind of had an idea of what was coming. All around we felt prepared and felt like that was executed on the field."
On the team's performance:
"We have been playing great complimentary football. Everyone's making plays and playing hard and putting it all on the line."
On tight end Jared Wiley:
"He was a beast out there today, I kind of joked with him a little bit about his 81-yard run but he looked fast out there today. He's just a really smart player. He knows how to use his body to help himself get open and he's just an all-around good football player."
TCU tight end, Jared Wiley
On the game:
"Tonight is the type of game that I've known for five years that I am capable of having. I can't thank Coach (Kendal) Briles and Josh (Hoover) and everyone else who has been a part of this journey enough for allowing me to display that tonight."
On his two touchdowns:
"On the first one, I got open down the seam and Josh did a great job at seeing that and getting the ball to me, that's just kind of what happened. The second one, any type of third and long or anything like that, we run everyone on verticals and clear it out and wait for my linebacker to blitz and the second he does, I go and it's kind of wide open"
On the team's momentum after the win:
"Nobody in this locker room is ready for this season to be over. Nobody wants it to end on Friday. Having this momentum going into this big week where we are fighting for bowl eligibility is going to be a big deal for us."
On quarterback Josh Hoover
"He got thrown in at a tough time. He played great against BYU then had to go and play against four really tough defenses and then UT who has arguably one of the toughest defenses in the country. For him to be resilient and stay confident in himself and trust the process shows to who he is as a person and as a leader for us, shows how much resilience he has."
TCU quarterback, Josh Hoover
On tight end Jared Wiley's touchdown and long run to score:
"When he caught it, all I could think about is having to make a block and Savion (Williams) did that. He comes off of his route and pins the guy chasing Jared (Wiley) so he can go score a touchdown. It just shows you what kind of guy that Savion is and playing receiver. Its about what you do when you don't have the ball and Savion is a great example of that and Jared was rolling pretty fast and got it done."
On his growth this season:
"You see a bunch of different situations and start to recognize when you need to take a chance and when you don't. Developing over these past couple of days has been big and I'm looking forward to continuing to find ways to get better. We haven't reached our ceiling and that's for sure. We will be going back to work tomorrow and get this thing figured out moving forward."
On getting points early in the game
"It was good that we were able to start fast in the first half. We didn't execute very well on the goal line. We had a couple plays I wish we could have back, but it felt great having an early lead that gives the defensive confidence that they can play free and have more momentum throughout the rest of the game."
Baylor Head Coach Dave Aranda
On the game:
"I'm disappointed, frustrated, upset. I thought to start the game that there was some good focus and energy. I thought that offensively we were able to move the ball some. I thought defensively there was some composure and consistency in stopping the run. I think that has been an issue. I thought in the interior run we were able to really hone in on it. I thought once the third downs start to hit us. Typically, you get to third and 10 plus, it's an advantage for the defense and this was completely the opposite. That was kind of the story of the game. The inability to stop them on third downs opened up a bunch of problems for us and its very hurtful.
On the offense:
"I thought the ability to move the ball through the middle of the field was contingent on the run game. I thought that continued to improve from last week to this week. I thought the urgency to score or the urgency to get points down there came down to contested throws, guys making yards after catch and we just failed to accomplish those things. I think there's times where we had the opportunity to make the throw with a guy draped over us, or make a catch rather, and we just couldn't do it. We caught a ball and there's a defender right there and it's a bang-bang play. It's 4th and 3 or 4th and 4 instead of a first down."
On not capitalizing on the momentum after a 33-yard pass to Drake Dabney:
"I think anytime you are dealing with losses, you are dealing with failure is that the challenge is always to not let the past be predictive of the future. So, you deal with that. I think everyone can kind of feel the momentum of the drive and everybody was counting on getting points that drive. And so when we did not, it was a lot to come back from. I thought our guys were able to fight and to make efforts and to get points. I think that was a factor in the game."
Baylor linebacker, Braden Strauss
On the offense's mistakes:
"I feel like we had plays to be made and we weren't able to make those plays and execute to our fullest capabilities. I think that's what it came back to."
On third downs:
"Every time we hit the red zone, the goal is to get points out of it and we weren't able to do that today. It's something we need to continue to work on and it's definitely something we need to win games."
On failing to execute week after week:
"We'd be stupid if we hadn't tried fixing it yet. Things we're struggling with, we're continuing to work on them and find ways to fix those problems, so we can come out, compete, and win games.
Baylor linebacker, Brooks Miller
On TCU's performance:
"I'm not trying to take any credit away from TCU and all the hard work they put in, but at the end of the day every time they had a big play or momentum swing, we didn't do what we had practiced. We have to get better with the execution part. It was all things we did and saw in practice and we just need to bring it up on Saturday."
On finding consistency:
"That just goes back to through the week you need to prepare. I think everyone needs to take a step back and look at themselves and ask "is it me?" I know I had to do that this season and maybe I need to do it again and take a step back and see am I the problem, look at the film, and see what's going on. We haven't strung a lot of good series together and momentum is a huge thing and we haven't felt momentum in such a long time. As a team - and as a defense - we need to get that back and get a little bit of swagger with it."
