TCU fires top air rifle score on the day
FORT WORTH – In a battle of the top three teams in the nation, No. 2 TCU fired a team score of 4,730 to finish second. The Horned Frogs shot a 2,383 in air rifle to finish first in the discipline. Stephanie Grundsoee was the top TCU shooter. She sat third amongst all shooters.
TCU produced three of the top 10 individuals led by Grundsoee's third place finish with an aggregate of 1,188. Katie Zaun tied for fifth with an aggregate of 1,184. Jeanne Haverhill matched her career-high with an aggregate of 1,179, which was good for 10th among competitors.
In smallbore, TCU fired a team score of 2,347. Grundsoee was third in the discipline, shooting a 591. She was one of just four shooters to eclipse the 590 plateau. Zaun's 589 was tied for fifth. Also contributing to the team score was Mikole Hogan (584) and Haverhill (583).
Five TCU shooters were among the top 10. Grundsoee tied for first after shooting a 597. Haverhill's career-high 596 was tied for third, while Zaun and Hogan finished in a five-way tie for fifth after shooting a 595. Stephanie Allan rounded out the top 10 with a 594.
While not factoring in the team score, freshman Kaylynn Slaughter made her collegiate debut. She shot a 570 in smallbore and a 577 in air rifle. In her season debut, Annie Downum fired a career-high 590 in air rifle.
West Virginia finished first, shooting a team score of 4,748 (2,366 smallbore; 2,382 air rifle). Nebraska shot a team score of 4,699 (2,327 smallbore; 2,372 air rifle).
TCU returns to the range Saturday against the defending National Champions Alaska Nanooks. The squads will shoot a pair of matches over the weekend.
