TCU 44, BYU 11
TCU head coach, Sonny Dykes
Opening statement:
"To start, I am really proud of our team. We had a really tough last two weeks and I think in a lot of ways that was kind of a gut-check for our guys. And for them to come out and play like they did, I think shows a lot about who they are and I am really proud of them. [Today's game] wasn't perfect, but our guys played really hard and tough, and we played better football. I just love the way they played. I thought our coaches did a really good job of preparing our guys against BYU and had a smart game plan for a quarterback who's never started a football game, in Josh Hoover. I thought Josh played incredibly well, but I am not surprised because he is the most prepared player on our team. Defensively, I thought we played outstanding, we did a really good job of not giving up big plays, and getting good pressure on the quarterback.
On the gameplan for Josh Hoover throwing the ball as much as he did:
"BYU kind of forced us to play that way. I thought that Josh responded incredibly well. Good decision-making, but missed a couple of deep balls that we've got to be able to hit, but for his first start to throw for 439 yards I think is a good performance."
On this being potentially the most complete game that TCU has had this season:
"Certainly, because this is a quality football team. And I wish that it was cleaner and we just haven't played that clean game yet, but the thing that we did consistently today was we made plays on third down. Josh and our offensive line did an unbelievable job in protecting on third and long, and we were able to keep drives alive and score points. I thought Griffin [Kell] kicked the ball well tonight, kicked it with a lot of confidence. So we are certainly heading in the right direction."
TCU quarterback, Josh Hoover
On throwing the ball 60 times:
"I love throwing the ball, Whatever it takes to win. That's just the way the game unfolded, and we just went with it. So, we just roll with it and execute the game."
On an interception return for a touchdown to start game
"Just the momentum swing off the jump is huge. So that was really big for us and gave us the momentum and allowed us to kind of have that snowball effect the rest of the game."
On being prepared for his first start:
"I feel like I worked my whole life for this opportunity. The good Lord has blessed me to be here and honestly, I shouldn't be here. I was committed to Indiana. I didn't have any offers like this. Coach Dykes took a chance on me and I just can't express how grateful I am for the opportunity to be here and to play with these guys. And this stage is just it's unbelievable and I'm so thankful."
On the first drive:
"The first drive was kind of a blur to be honest. Thankfully JP (Richardson) made a heck of a play and so did the guys in the endzone. I was pumped and just excited. Ready to go."
On relationship with teammates:
"I have a really good relationship with a lot of those guys and that's something we're going to continue to work on and continue spending time off the field. The big thing is I want those guys to know I care about them. I want them to know that I want them to be successful on Saturday. I'm going to put the time in Monday through Friday to tell them 'hey, this is what you're going to do and this is what we're about.' I think that relationship is good."
TCU linebacker, Nmadi Obiazor
On the defense:
"This week, coach drilled into our mind about taking things one step at a time. So just shutting them out one play at a time. We just reset and did it all over again."
On Josh Hoover:
"Seeing him do stuff like that really turned us up. Going into the game, it was his start so the defense had to step up and put the offense in positions to make plays."
BYU head coach, Kalani Sitake
On the game
"That was not the result we expected. I have to give a lot of credit to TCU and what Sonny has done. This was a really good team and they played for a national championship last year. We couldn't find the rhythm we've had during the season for some reason. We didn't help ourselves either, but this is a really talented team. In all three phases, we weren't clicking, and we didn't adapt to TCU."
On TCU head coach Sonny Dykes:
"As everyone saw, Sonny is a great coach, and he figured things out in a position where their backs were against the wall. That seems to happen quite a bit in this conference, where guys have to respond from a loss or situation that they were in. Now, we find ourselves in that situation, so we'll see how we can respond to this game. My hat's off to TCU."
On the TCU offense
"Today, they looked a lot like the team I saw last year. They were really in rhythm early, everything was making a lot of sense for them, and they were efficient on third down. They kept us on our heels and they utilized their speed-ups and also a big physical line.
On how TCU's change at starting quarterback impacted the game
"Looking at what they did last week, those were probably plays that were built more for Chandler Morris. This week, I think they just utilized his talents. He's a really effective thrower and he's smart with the ball in his hands. He didn't make a lot of mistakes and I thought he took necessary risks. They seemed to have a really good day. It was like, chunk yards, large, big plays, and they just did a lot of different things."
BYU quarterback, Kaden Slovis
On the bye week's effect on the game:
"I think we had a great week of prep - offensively, defensively, I feel like we got better. We gave ourselves the opportunity to prepare well and perform well, but you have to go out and do it. I don't think we did today. I didn't do it today. If I want to give our guys a chance to be in this game, I have to play better. It starts with me and everyone in the building probably feels the same way. You can do as much as you can to prepare to get ready to compete but you have to compete on Saturday."
On TCU's performance:
"You can always give them credit. They're a good team. They did some good things well, but they didn't do anything we weren't prepared for. You'd like to think a good offense beats a good defense. It starts with myself I can do a lot of things better. We had plays we made and didn't execute them. Again, I can do better to give us a winning chance going forward."
BYU linebacker, AJ Vongphachanh
On TCU's quarterback change effecting their defense:
"We kind of expected them to come and run that ball with any new quarterback in there, but they did a really good job of executing winning their one-on-ones."
On TCU's third-down success:
"I thought we did really good on the control downs, but when it came to the third downs there were some critical ones where we just didn't get off the field. That just comes down to winning one-on-ones and getting home."
