Fort Worth: TCU Women's tennis opened their 2023 season with TCU Invitational at the Bayard H. Friedman Center with some impressive performances led by newcomers.
Freshman Yu-Chin Tsai out of Taiwan went unbeaten in day one of the tournament with two victories against Texas Tech. She began the afternoon with a doubles victory with her partner Helena Narmont. Together they brought down the duo of Camryn Stepp and Arena Oreshchenkova by way of a 6-0 sweep.
Tsai continued her early momentum into singles. The freshman battled Texas Tech's Oreshchenkova, ultimately reigning victorious in a three-set thriller 3-6, 7-6, 1-0 (10-8).
The duo continued off their hot start on day two, as they upset the No. 32 ranked doubles team of SMU, Johnson and Nylander (6-3).
Destinee Martins immediately impacted the Frogs in her first spring action with the team. The transfer junior won two singles matches on the weekend. The first coming against Nylander of SMU in straight sets, two and four. On day three she made quick work of Tarleton State's Makantasi two and one.
In doubles, Martins and Margaret Polk took down Tarleton's Razet and Pecheco by way of a 6-1 victory. Polk moved into singles where she edged Elsa Boisson (7-5, 7-6).
TCU Women's Tennis Head Coach Lee Taylor Walker spoke on his team's potential after the Horned Frogs' first action of 2023.
"It's great to get the season started. We have a good team with a lot of potential this year. If we stay closely connected on and off the court as teammates and friends, and continue to put consistent work in every week, we will be able to beat anyone. Those two things aren't easy and it will ultimately be up to the players and coaches making these positive choices day in and day out."
