Miles' injury hinders comeback in SEC/Big 12 Challenge
STARKVILLE, Miss. - Down three scholarship players, No. 11 TCU rallied from a 12-point deficit before falling in overtime at Mississippi State, 81-74, Saturday in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge.
The Horned Frogs (16-5) went into the game without starting center Eddie Lampkin Jr. (ankle) and guard Rondel Walker (sick). Nearly four minutes into the game, the Big 12's second-leading scorer, Mike Miles Jr., left the game with a knee injury and didn't return.
Behind Tolu Smith, who finished with 27 points, 13 rebounds and five assists, the Bulldogs (13-8) built a 12-point lead, 23-11, with 7:14 to play in the opening half. Shahada Wells gave TCU life with five points in the final 36 seconds of the half. The Frogs held the Bulldogs without a field goal the final 5:17 of the half. MSU led 31-25 at the break.
A 3-pointer by Chuck O'Bannon gave TCU its first lead of the game, 38-37, with 15:31 to play in the second half. It was the first of seven ties and 12 lead changes. A layup by Xavier Cork gave TCU its largest lead, 43-37, with 11:15 remaining.
TCU trailed by two points with 55 seconds to play until Emanuel Miller tied the game, 66-66, with 32 seconds remaining. Miller scored all 13 of his points in the second half. TCU's defense held to send the game to overtime.
After Wells scored a layup off of the opening tip, the Bulldogs answered with eight-straight points including back-to-back 3-pointers by Shakeel Moore. A three by O'Bannon cut the deficit from six to three with 1:17 to play. MSU closed on a 7-3 run and snapped its six-game losing streak.
Damion Baugh played nearly all 45 minutes and finished with a team-high 19 points and had five rebounds and four assists. Wells and JaKobe Coles had 12 points and O'Bannon finished with 10.
The Horned Frogs will return to action on Tuesday when they host West Virginia (13-8) at 8 p.m. on ESPNU.
