Fearnley Wins Singles Championship at Battle in the Bay Classic

First Horned Frog to win the tournament since Alex Rybakov in 2018
SAN FRANCISCO – TCU has its first championship of 2022-23.
Jake Fearnley captured the main singles title at the Battle in the Bay Classic on Sunday, becoming the first Horned Frog in program history to win the tournament since Alex Rybakov in 2018.
Fearnley, the No. 65 ITF singles player, swept No. 32 Jonas Eriksson Ziverts of Arizona 6-4, 7-5 to claim the chalice.
The performance highlighted a perfect 5-0 week for the Edinburgh, Scotland native. Fearnley posted a 10-1 mark in sets played.
He secured his spot in Sunday's finale with a straight set defeat of California's Ryder Jackson, 7-6, 7-6, on Saturday.
Fearnley earned a wild card to a series of future ATP Challenger and Futures tournaments with the victory.
Luc Fomba – Fearnley's doubles partner – also secured a wild card after advancing to the singles semifinals. Fomba, No. 5 in the ITF singles rankings, fell to Ziverts 7-5, 6-1 on Friday. He defeated Nil Giralddez of UC Davis, Oklahoma's Nathan Han and No. 62 Yuta Kikuchi of California in the first three rounds en route to the wild card.
Fomba and Fearnley, the No. 1 ITF doubles team in the country, nearly completed a clean sweep of the tournament for TCU. The duo scored victories over Marvin Schaber and Iiro Vasa of San Diego and Andre Ilagan and Axeel Labrunie of Hawaii on Thursday and Friday, respectively, to earn a spot in the semifinals. They suffered an 8-6 loss at the hands of Jackson and Lucas Magnaudet on Saturday.
Collectively, the Horned Frogs posted a 13-4 combined singles record over the four-day affair.
Pedro Vives won the consolation draw via four straight sweeps from Friday-Sunday. Following an opening-round loss on Thursday, the Spaniard smacked Sema Pankin of University of Portland 6-0, 6-4 on Friday to advance to the consolation quarterfinals. He won two matches on Saturday. Vives first scored a 6-4, 6-1 win over Arizona State's Max McKennon, then defeated Giraldez 7-5, 6-3. A 6-3, 6-1 rout of the Sooners' Alex Martinez on Sunday capped Vives' run through the consolation bracket.
Rounding out the quartet of Horned Frogs competing in the Bay Area was Lui Maxted, who defeated Jacob Bullarrd of Arizona State in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, in the opening round of the consolation bracket to earn his first win of the fall.
